Dai Mubai was already standing in the courtyard. Leaning against the wall with his arms crossed, he looked terrible, with dark circles clearly visible beneath his eyes.
When he saw Tang San come out, he merely raised his chin in greeting without saying a word.
Ma Hongjun was the second to emerge. He walked as though he were drifting, his legs limp and weak, the flesh on his face sagging. He looked like an eggplant that had been drained dry.
Oscar was the last one out.
He came out supporting himself against the doorframe, his face white as paper, his lips cracked, and his eye sockets sunken. His legs trembled, and every step felt as though he were treading on blades.
Yu Xiaogang stood in the middle of the courtyard, holding a bamboo rod as his gaze swept over the four of them. "Today's training: carry forty jin and run twenty-five laps around the village."
No one spoke.
No one had the strength to speak.
They silently strapped lead weights to their calves, put on backpacks filled with iron sand, then lined up and began to run.
On the dirt road at dawn, four figures moved slowly through the faint light. Their footsteps were heavy, their breathing ragged, and every step kicked up a small cloud of dust.
