Background / History
Mu En was already the master of Sea God Pavilion when Xuan Zi brought six-year-old Tang Wulin to Shrek Academy. While examining the child, he detected Sea God power within Tang Wulin and recognized the significance of his Blue Silver Grass, Clear Sky Hammer, Golden Dragon might, and unusual affinity with the Golden Ancient Tree. He immediately accepted Tang Wulin as his disciple and publicly designated him as the future master of Sea God Pavilion once he reached Hyper Douluo. 4
At the time Tang Wulin first entered Shrek, Mu En was severely debilitated: his waist was broken, his bones were full of cracks, and his Soul Power was badly scattered. Tang Wulin quietly treated him over the following six years with life energy, considering Mu En's survival essential to both Shrek's standing and his own growth. 16
Mu En made Tang Wulin the youngest Sea God Pavilion member in the academy's history, but concealed his exact status from the public. His reasoning was that Shrek needed “a living heir, not a living target.” 16
Appearance
Mu En is a gaunt, grizzled old man with cloudy but keen eyes. Though often seen resting in a bamboo recliner or wicker chair, his bearing changes sharply when he takes a matter seriously. 4 16 57
- Thin but powerful build despite his age and former injuries. 4
- Cloudy eyes described as blade-sharp when disciplining others. 4
- Grizzled hair, later touched by the golden motes released during Tang Wulin's Icefire Body Tempering. 60
- Frequently carries tea; Tang Wulin's habit of drinking tea influenced Mu En to take up the drink himself. 56
Personality
Mu En presents himself as relaxed and occasionally indolent, sunbathing beneath trees, reclining in chairs, and eating chicken legs. This demeanor does not diminish his authority: he immediately recognizes rare martial souls, detects abnormal power signatures, and makes consequential decisions without hesitation. 4 16 18
He is protective of talented younger disciples. He absolves Zhang Lexuan of blame after the Star Dou Great Forest incident, shields Tang Wulin's identity from public exposure, and grants Gu Yuena core-disciple status after learning of her six-element Elemental Envoy martial soul and her potential fusion with Tang Wulin. 4 16 17 18
Mu En is also receptive to Tang Wulin's reformist ideas. He allows Tang Wulin broad authority within the academy, supports discussion of Shrek's casualties and admissions practices, and approves changes to the Outer Court assessment system that abolish immediate expulsion. 23 49 55
