Leman Russ did not look at his brother, because he did not want to arouse Kal'tsit's suspicions with any small gesture. Since he had sworn to cover up his brother's scandal, he would do his best to do so.

So Leman Russ fabricated a little story, drawing on some of this land's cultures to explain their past.

"Revival?" Kal'tsit was no stranger to the term. There were quite a few people on Rhodes Island who had undergone such an experience; she and the Doctor were among them.

This land was immensely ancient and weighty. Ancient history lay buried beneath its crust, and even Kal'tsit, who had walked on from antiquity, found it difficult to glimpse the full picture.

Seeing the woman before him grow more solemn and earnest, Leman Russ knew that she had accepted the story he had made up. All that remained was to fill it out with coherent logic and conveniently gloss over certain parts when necessary.

Too much detail would only make it worse.

The right balance of detail and omission was what made things believable.

A vanguard against evil demons? Who could that have been?

Sargon's King of Kings? Or the Incubi Khan, whose expeditions had reached the ends of the earth and met no equal?

Judging by the style of their armor, Kal'tsit leaned toward the former. If that guess was correct, then the land these two knights had once fought upon was...
