Background / History

Ancient Degeneration

The Silent King modified a gene bomb to divide and mutate Ork genes, producing a new social structure involving Squigs and Gretchin. Szeras received knowledge intended to provoke an Ork civil war and created the energy constructs Gork and Mork to maintain their divisions 729.

Facing extinction, the Orks activated a Negation Compensation Device as a final attempt to preserve their knowledge. Necrontyr Immortals reversed time and altered knowledge-bearing spores to make them revolting, preventing the Orks from recovering what they had lost 729.

Modern Waaagh!s

Modern Orks gather around exceptionally strong leaders, combining their desire for battle with extensive scavenging and weapons production. Bonecrusher Salaka's fleet traveled aboard converted space hulks to Ullanor—now Armageddon—which his visions identified as an Ork holy land. The fleet broke through orbital defenses and crashed onto the planet, disregarding those killed on impact 38 96.

Their development changes during Lin Fan's involvement. After encountering Loba's shields and teleporter, Lin Fan recognizes that the Orks' technological advances have become a growing danger and connects these altered details to the effects of his transmigration 150.

Appearance

  • Physique: Hulking green bodies and enormous hands; particularly powerful warbosses can make Space Marines appear scrawny 36 101.
  • Headgear: Some wear metal helmets decorated with spikes or animal horns, while others favor crudely spiked hairstyles 36.
  • Armor: Equipment ranges from exposed vehicle crews to heavily armored warriors with plates bolted directly to their shoulders and chests 36 695.
  • Weapons: Oversized pistols, massive axes, power claws, and saw-toothed weapons assembled with wire and scrap are recurring features 36 97 695.

Culture and Society

Fighting as Recreation

Orks fight for excitement, memorable opponents, and stories worth boasting about—not merely survival or conquest. Veterans of particularly satisfying battles are carried onto rubbish heaps so other Boyz can hear their accounts 36 96.

An easy victory can disappoint them. At Hades Hive, evacuated streets, mines, and the absence of useful loot leave many Orks bored enough to destroy buildings, abandon the invasion for other fights, or attack one another 53.

Leadership and Hierarchy

  • Strength establishes authority. Bosses are generally stronger and richer than ordinary Orks; Iron Foot Bad Gut earns obedience through repeated battlefield victories 53 101.
  • Leadership losses fracture armies. Killing the largest boss can scatter a force into smaller tribes that fight until another formidable warlord emerges 97.
  • Succession can interrupt an ongoing battle. After Loba is believed dead, his followers fight one another to select a replacement while still facing Imperial troops 154.
  • Subordinates are expendable. Boyz killed in internal brawls may be dismissed as weaklings unworthy of further thought 53.
  • Domination extends downward. Gretchin serve as cooks, mechanics, and laborers; the ancient account also depicts Gretchin abusing Snotlings 38 101 729 1090.

Scrap, Teeth, and Food

  • Scrap is both loot and industrial material. Captured machinery, ammunition, and vehicles are taken to factories for additional armor, guns, and rockets 38.
  • Teeth are used in transactions: an Ork recounts selling a strange red creature to a Mek for five hundred teeth 96.
  • Squigs, mushrooms, and spores serve as food; spicy spores are prepared by Gretchin cooks 101 1088 1155.
  • Cannibalism is openly practiced. At Hades Hive, Boyz fight over a roasted companion before their boss eats his head 53.
  • Humans may also be eaten. Bad Gut has slain Guardsmen minced and added to his meal 101.

Cunning and Social Change

The Blood Axes trade equipment with humans, sometimes work as Imperial mercenaries, and favor concealment, infiltration, and sabotage. Their willingness to borrow human methods distinguishes them from less adaptable kin, although their bright, crude vehicle camouflage has limited practical value 104.

Later Ork society displays more elaborate economic coercion. Big Mek Miser uses loans, interest, financial reports, and threatened wage deductions to control his workers; the narration explicitly describes Orks becoming more civilized and cunning, with immediate fistfights less common 1090.

Ongron's settlement develops electrical infrastructure and slogans urging Orks to “breed less and think more.” He promotes moderation because the planet cannot support unchecked Ork growth 1155.

Abilities & Skills

Waaagh! Energy and the Power of Belief

  • Population strengthens the field: More Orks produce stronger Waaagh! energy 125.
  • Belief supports physical growth: Bad Gut's enormous size is attributed to the Power of Belief and growth forged through battle 101.
  • Morale can enhance performance: Bunglak gains speed and strength during his assault after adopting the cry “Waaagh! for the Emperor” and killing a disloyal Ork 56.
  • Understanding creates limits: An Ork who believes his axe can break anything may chop open a tank; learning that its armor should resist that weapon can remove this advantage 125.
  • The effect can extend beyond Orks: Vulkan's Warp essence begins to suffer contamination by Waaagh! energy, alarming the other Primarchs 1110.

Innate Combat Instincts and Resilience

  • Orks possess fighting instincts that guide them toward battles and enable rapid reactions despite their cumbersome appearance 96 97.
  • Larger, longer-lived Orks develop stronger instinctive responses; Ughulhard evades gunfire and demonstrates superior close-combat technique against Yarrick 97.
  • Severe wounds do not always immediately incapacitate them. One disemboweled Boy kills his attacker, then stuffs his intestines back into his abdomen to continue fighting 36.
  • Toughness does not guarantee steady morale: the defeat of a leader or the appearance of a feared enemy can trigger mass flight 97 106.

Improvised Engineering

  • Rapid imitation: Orks need not follow a conventional technology tree; seeing advanced equipment inspires them to construct cruder equivalents 125.
  • Mechanical compensation: Waaagh! energy can overlook minor construction faults, including mismatched bullets and disconnected wiring 125.
  • Structural dependence: Without Waaagh! power sustaining it, an abandoned factory becomes significantly less sturdy 1090.
  • Advanced inventions: Documented creations include repulsion shields, teleporters, gravity towing cannons, and several varieties of defensive shield 150 204 906 1090.
  • Continued improvement: Later tanks receive complete armor coverage and produce less visible exhaust, denying Imperial artillery an easy targeting cue 1087.

Psychic Coordination

  • Orks transmit combat orders through their own psychic network faster than the Astra Militarum's communicator-based system 139.
  • This allows forces under pressure to stop charging, withdraw, and switch to ranged Gorkanaut support 139.
  • Coordination is not constant: their usual scattered assaults contrast sharply with the disciplined infantry, armor, and airborne attack at Hades Hive 105.

Music and Battlefield Morale

  • An Ork bard's electric guitar boosts nearby Orks' morale and firepower during Dakka Bang Bang's assault 59.
  • Dakka Bang Bang reacts angrily when the music is interrupted, pursuing the Iron Fist Squad before being forced to retreat 59.

  • Gorkanauts: Heavy mechanical constructs used for ranged support and encountered around Loba's banner tower 139 154.
  • Loba's emergency teleporter and repulsion shield: Advanced equipment that allows the Mek to escape Lin Fan 150.
  • Bubble and Shimmer Shields: Defensive systems fitted to the Gork-Emperor; the Shimmer Shield deflects energy attacks 204.
  • Gork's Head: An Ork-head-shaped space fortress made by welding dozens of space hulks together, supported by multiple shield systems 906.
  • Gravity towing cannon: Miser's salvage weapon, which projects a sphere that releases a powerful pulling force 1090.
  • Rocket-propelled planetary fragments: Ironhide's forces destroy a planet and fit its surviving pieces with engines to accompany their fleet 654.

Gork-Emperor

  • Built around the living Lorn aggregate, initially called Gork's Yellow Thing, with Rys serving as its control hub 203.
  • Armored into a colossal steel train with hundreds of heavy cannons, segmented fortress sections, and anti-aircraft guns 203.
  • Emerges from beneath Commorragh to attack the Drukhari, broadcasting the combined cry of tens of millions of consciousnesses 204.
  • Suffers engine and communication damage from Blink missiles, requiring Mekboyz to perform emergency repairs with welding torches and iron plates 205.

Trivia

  • The Armageddon Steel Legion can use Ork weapons and, in emergencies, operate their ramshackle vehicles—abilities other Astra Militarum regiments generally lack 768.
  • The Orks encountered in the Overlord side story are explicitly contrasted with the expedition's green-skinned Orks as far weaker opponents; their nations include an Ork Federation 1283 1284.
