Silan looked at him and asked, "I'd like some advice on learning to become an Animagus."
Instructions for becoming an Animagus were easy to find, but the process involved an enormous number of steps. If anything went wrong along the way, he would have to start over. Trying to figure it all out alone would inevitably lead to mistakes and wasted time.
Now that he had a wizard who had mastered the skill right beside him, it was the perfect chance to learn from his experience.
Professor McGonagall was also a master of Transfiguration, but Silan did not want anyone else to know he was practicing to become an Animagus yet.

"You want to become an Animagus?" Sirius asked in surprise. "What for?"
"Personal reasons," Silan answered vaguely.

"I've read up on them a little," Silan said.
"Good." Sirius nodded. "I'd suggest getting all the essential supplies ready beforehand."
"You need to store a death's-head hawkmoth pupa in a dry bottle beforehand. And you'll need a silver teaspoonful of dew collected from a place that hasn't been exposed to sunlight or human contact for seven days," Sirius reminded him. "I'd suggest preparing several batches of those ingredients."
