Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Elder Dragon | 13 101 | Possesses immense Life Energy and can produce natural-disaster-scale effects even without deliberate intent. Elder Dragons undertaking an Elder Dragon Crossing are described as having mastered their Life Energy to the peak of their age. |
| Feral Elder Dragon | 148 | Old World migrants can become Feral after adapting to the New World and absorbing sufficient Life Energy; their scales gain a silvery metallic sheen. |
| Tempered State | 148 | A widespread enhancement that greatly raises stamina, muscle activity, vitality, and energy while preserving some rationality. It can coexist with the Feral state. |
| Veteran King Elder Dragon | 296 | A status exclusive to Elder Dragons that survive the limit of their lifespan, gaining improved physical capabilities and a new, extended lifespan. |
| Tempered Elder Dragon | 466 476 | A complete Tempered Elder Dragon vastly exceeds ordinary Elder Dragons; several ordinary Elder Dragons may need to cooperate to contend with one. |
Nature and Ecology
Elder Dragons are manifestations of Life Energy and are exceptionally sensitive to it. Their presence can disturb migration patterns, activate Earth Vein Energy, and compel surrounding creatures to flee long before the dragon itself appears 13 28.
Their ecological impact is not limited to combat. A Steel Dragon's instinctive wingbeats can generate hurricanes and alter the weather, while Teostra can superheat a desert to the point of crystallization 13 28. Even restrained clashes between Elder Dragons leave dangerous residual energy that disrupts local food chains and drives lesser monsters from the area 320.
Elder Dragons possess extreme vitality: injuries that would cripple lesser monsters are often minor to them. Killing one in a single encounter is considered unlikely unless there is a major disparity in ecological standing; battles more often end with one side withdrawing 207 278 281.
An Elder Dragon nearing the end of its lifespan may lose control of the Life Energy stored within its body, causing it to leak through its mouth and carapace. Its death can release enough Life Energy to threaten vein eruptions and environmental collapse 322 327.
Elder Dragon Crossings
Elder Dragon Crossings are migrations to the New World. Migrating Elder Dragons are drawn by opportunities to exceed their life limits, while their routes can devastate the regions they pass through 82 335.
Guild observations indicate that the interval between migrations has shortened from centuries to roughly a decade in recent times. Luo Yun attributes this change to a powerful existence attracting Elder Dragons to the New World 276.
Individual Differences
Elder Dragons are not uniformly powerful. Experience, growth environment, age, and energy-control efficiency create major differences even among members of the same species 320. A Veteran King Iceborne Kushala Daora, for example, overwhelms a younger Steel Dragon through superior experience and energy output despite both being Elder Dragons 295 296.
Documented Types and Individuals
| Elder Dragon | Documented traits | Chapters |
|---|---|---|
| Steel Dragon | Commands wind and can create hurricanes, storms, and tornadoes. Its metallic carapace is vulnerable to abnormal elemental energy disrupting its internal energy flow. | 13 278 281 |
| Teostra / Solar Dragon | An immense heat source whose fire-attribute energy can ignite the ground. Mature individuals may ignore humans unless provoked or irritated. | 101 221 |
| Mist Dragon | Uses mist-based invisibility, light refraction, and mixed poison that impairs respiration, appetite, stamina, senses, and vocal cords. | 28 30 261 |
| Kirin | An “unrestricted” Elder Dragon known for its usually docile temperament. When threatened, its thermal breath can melt earth and stone, while its fully liberated body temperature can reach 1400°C. | 166 |
| Miasma Kushala Daora | An ancient Elder Dragon that absorbed Earth Vein Energy over a long period and created miasma covering nearly an entire forest. | 128 |
| Dalamud Dragon | A mature form reached through the Caos Dragon’s dangerous final molts. Its growth is constrained by a reproductive drive that forces it to direct much of its energy toward creating offspring. | 165 208 |
| Iceborne Kushala Daora | A cold-specialized Elder Dragon that produces supercooled water and ice armor. Veteran King individuals possess fully purple, metallic volcanic-glass carapaces. | 295 296 |
| Skeletal Dragon | A 36-meter necromancer-like predator whose tentacles use Mimicry to attach corpses and replicate the combat styles of their original owners. | 418 419 |
Abilities and Traits
Life Energy Manipulation
Elder Dragons possess and control Life Energy at a level far beyond ordinary monsters.
- Their Life Energy can exert instinctive pressure that causes lower-ranking monsters to scatter or cease fighting 116.
- They can absorb Life Energy to strengthen themselves, extend their lives, or accelerate evolution 148 320.
- Their deaths may release concentrated Life Energy violently enough to alter terrain and destabilize the Vein Corridor 327 328.
Environmental Authority
Many Elder Dragons can alter their surroundings through species-specific powers.
- Wind — Steel Dragons create hurricanes and high-speed air currents 13 281.
- Heat and fire — Teostra radiates extreme heat, while Solar Dragons can turn entire regions into high-temperature disaster zones 101 221.
- Poison and illusion — Mist Dragons create hallucinogenic mist and camouflage themselves through light refraction 28 30.
- Ice — Iceborne Kushala Daoras spread supercooled water and form ice armor 295.
- Dragon Attribute — Skeletal Dragons can expel Dragon Attribute energy as high-penetration laser breath that suppresses other energies 424.
Mimicry
The Skeletal Dragon’s apparent “necromancy” is a special form of Mimicry rather than actual resurrection.
- It adheres monster remains to its dragon-head-like tentacles with mucus 419.
- Its own high energy level allows replicated attacks to exceed the strength of the original non-Elder Dragon creature 419.
- It cannot replicate an Elder Dragon’s energy at a level greatly beyond the original owner, nor can it animate super-giant Elder Dragons 419.
- With enough high-ranking carcasses, it can fight like an army of Elder Dragons; its ultimate move, Genesis, is among the strongest attacks used by Tempered Elder Dragons 419.
Behavior
Elder Dragons are generally solitary and territorial. According to the Great Leader’s experience, different Elder Dragon species often fight until one retreats from the territory, though exceptions exist among family-oriented species and unusually rational individuals 261.
They do not necessarily regard humans as threats. Teostra initially treats the Investigation Team as insignificant “insects” and resumes sunbathing rather than attacking, only becoming aggressive after its patience wears thin 101.
Their treatment by the world is similarly unusual: unless an Elder Dragon pollutes the world, threatens a continent, or attempts extreme ecological destruction, it is generally repelled rather than killed 278.
