At its tip, seven war fortresses charged into the defenders' still-forming lines like an armored iron fist smashing through a ballistic plate.
Some defenders tried to stop these superheavy armored vehicles, firing their artillery at the gigantic machines, but it had no effect. Their anti-tank guns were little more than scratches against the war fortresses' solid frontal armor.
Moreover, in pursuit of absolute protection, the war fortresses had been designed with all-around defense in mind. Even their rear sections were covered in heavy armor plating. This reduced their mobility, but allowed them to withstand most weapons in urban combat.
In the face of the defenders' counterattack, the massive guns mounted on the war fortresses swiftly returned fire, hurling shells through buildings and armor alike.

In the south of the city, Wanderer mechs urgently dispatched by the Civic Temple held their ground alongside the New California Republic's forces. Two bipedal machines clad in black iron and scorch marks strode from their previous concealed positions like beasts prowling through a maze of ruins.
Energy shields glittered beneath the rain of fire. Every so often, the two Wanderer mechs stopped and
