Diego watched the Void, gazing at the roiling birth membrane of the Unborn above.

He knew without being told that this surging would continue forever. It would expand, swallowing more worlds.

It would grow higher and farther, staring into the heart of infinite emptiness like the eye of a god.

"I'm listening."

Yalide chuckled first, then said softly:

"The Eldar worship brought about her birth, and she claimed all Eldar souls, making them soul-shattered... When any mortal body dies, its soul flows into the supreme beyond. That is the law of nature."

Yalide moved beside Diego, bringing with it an oily, cloying scent.

"But when an Eldar dies, their soul is dragged straight into the mouth of the goddess they betrayed. She hungers for them, because they are her people. When they die, she drinks their souls dry—"

Long, slender claws lightly brushed across the wraithbone on Diego's body. He remained unmoved, merely shaking his head slightly.

"Not only the dead, right?"

"Yes. That great power hungers eternally. She pursues the essence of any soul-shattered being closest to her. For instance... Diego, you are not nearly far enough away."

Yalide let out a mocking snicker.

"But you are clever. You know to replenish the essence drained from you by tormenting all living things. That is also what makes you most interesting."

As they spoke, the daemon and Diego began moving westward.

He walked into the wind, helmeted and bowed-headed, listening to the daemon's psychic lecture.

Yalide closed its eyes as tightly as its twisted face allowed. Its gliding body left a serpentine trail in the dust.

The marks they left would not last long. The gale always swiftly destroyed every trace they left behind.

"Part of what you said agrees with certain scriptures of the Kaimon Church."
