The monster sprang up and pounced at Gagbad, sending the canvas sheets around them fluttering.
Hearing an explosive crack like gale-force winds snapping ship sails, the Ork boss involuntarily backed away and fired his pistol repeatedly. Yet the bullets that should have struck their target sliced through nothing but air.
"Damn it! Are you all dead? Get over here!!"
He immediately called for his boys to support him, but received only silence.
There was no time to look any further. The thing landed before him and sent him flying with a savage blow.
"Waaagh!"
Gagbad crashed to the ground, knocking over a towering pile of liquor bottles and sending them rolling everywhere.
He twisted his body, trying to get back up, but searing pain immediately shot up his spine.
The Soul Eater discarded the work clothes the mechanic had draped over him, unbuttoning them with a nimbleness and care wholly at odds with his sinister appearance before setting them aside.
Gagbad saw that the exposed skin of the creature's upper body seemed to writhe and change, crimson like tanned leather. He also saw what looked like hands pressing outward from within its chest, along with the outline of a screaming face.
Human faces.
Its arms began to stretch and swell rapidly like balloons, its fingers fusing into flat, plate-like structures before becoming hard and smooth.
At last, its hands formed a pair of bone blades, with dark pink nerve tissue hanging beneath them like banners.
Gagbad aimed his pistol at where an ordinary person's heart would be and fired, but the monster's arms suddenly swept down and blocked the bullets.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The bullets exploded at the creature's feet. This unbelievable feat stunned the Ork boss; he had never imagined a living thing could deflect bullets with its flesh.
