Background / History
Grak began as a tribal boss and emerged as one of Guk's earliest followers. During the clash with the Red Eye Tribe, he commanded Guk's wagons and devised a linked-wagon barrier using chains and iron-plated beams. Guk's victory established his dominance over Grak, who subsequently became one of the Orks closest to Guk's core leadership. 22 28
By the time of Bloodfang Fort, Grak was considered the second-toughest boss after Guk. His Blood Axe Group consisted of elite fighters identified by their large red steel axes, and he used membership in the group as a prize for a climbing contest at the fort. 28
Guk later left Grak and his depleted legion at Blackstone to recruit and re-equip. Although Grak resisted the order, he obeyed; Guk considered the legion's weapons, armor, and numbers inadequate after prolonged campaigning. 106
Grak developed into the Goff Legion's warlord and Guk's principal assault commander. His reputation for direct violence earned him the names Red Butcher and Red Demon, while his victories and massacres made him feared throughout conquered territory. 704 856 1087
Appearance
Grak is a massive, square-headed Ork whose scarred face and red eyes project constant aggression. His later wargear is blood-red, heavily scarred, and layered over chainmail; he wears numerous Squig braids and carries several large weapons. 651 1087
- Thick, trunk-like neck and broad square head marked by intersecting scars. 1087
- Red eyes with black pupils; his exposed arms are long and heavily muscled. 651 653
- Squig braids hang from his head to his shoulder guards. 1087
- Usually wears heavy red plate armor over chainmail, decorated with leather knots, badges, and battle damage. 687 1087
- When training or planning, he may remove his upper armor and wear a sleeveless brown vest with totems, iron rings, and Squig braids. 651
Personality
Grak is intensely violent, impatient, and contemptuous of caution. He prefers immediate attacks to prolonged planning, frequently leads from the front, and reacts to hesitation or perceived weakness with intimidation or lethal force. His Boyz obey him primarily through fear and respect for his strength. 267 494
Despite this brutal image, Grak is not merely reckless. He is an exceptional duelist with sharp battlefield instincts, can organize formations and support fire, and maintains a command post for communications after repeated instruction from Guk. Quillsana considers his apparent mindlessness a deliberate mask, believing him to be deeply calculating. 22 494 662 1094
His loyalty to Guk is central to his identity. Grak sees their shared history of fighting out of corpse piles as proof that no other warlord should stand above him, making him resentful of Beluf and Mogtrakka's elevated positions. 887 893
Abilities & Skills
Physical Prowess and Endurance
Grak possesses immense strength, resilience, and speed even by Ork standards.
- Bullets fired at close range have shattered against his breastplate, while he continued slaughtering defenders in confined combat. 149
- He routinely absorbs gunfire, explosions, and heavy melee strikes without slowing his advance. 269 494 660
- His armor includes a compact energy shield capable of dispersing explosions and turning fragments into harmless motes of light. Only Guk and Grak are known to possess this type of shield. 660
- He recovered after being temporarily incapacitated by repeated bioelectric sniper rounds powerful enough to stun a whale. 705
Melee Combat
Grak's foremost talent is close-quarters fighting. Beluf describes him as a storm of killing intent whose focus, deceptive speed, and ability to read minor movements make him exceptionally dangerous in a duel. 195
- Uses weight, momentum, and relentless consecutive strikes to restrict faster opponents. 195
- Defeated a Beastman commander by cleaving it apart with his chainsaw battle-axe. 495
- Fought Beluf through the Golden Palace and its collapsing viewing platform; neither warlord yielded despite severe injuries. 278 279
- Survived and defeated Blades of Delirium Yalide after being impaled and restrained. 635
- His limitation is large-scale warfare: while an outstanding individual fighter, Beluf judges him less capable in broad offensive and defensive operations. 195
AAAGH Energy
Grak can channel AAAGH Energy, a power he discovered only shortly before the fall of Jima and initially kept secret from other Orks. 269
- Generates green electrical arcs that extinguish hostile flames and annihilate anything that contacts them. 269
- Can use the energy to break restraints and continue fighting through severe wounds. 635
- Entered the daemon conflict at Mountains of Madness wreathed in crackling electricity. 377
Command and Battlefield Instincts
Although he favors direct action, Grak can make practical battlefield decisions when necessary.
- Designed the linked-wagon defensive formation used against the Red Eye Tribe's chariots. 22
- Ordered grenade volleys and coordinated Weirdboyz psychic bombardment during the Beast Horde battle. 494
- Maintains a temporary command post with Weirdboyz for information and communication during urban warfare. 662
- Anticipated ambushes in Metokya City and ordered his bodyguards to thoroughly clear contested areas. 660 661
- Possesses acute threat intuition, detecting Kasko's presence before the ambush fully unfolded. 702
Marksmanship
Grak prefers axes to firearms but is a capable pistol user.
- His first four shots in the cathedral corridor killed or incapacitated four human defenders with precise hits. 660
- Other Orks believe his shots are unusually lucky, as if his bullets track targets; Grak dislikes this explanation and would rather his axe do the work. 660
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Ripper — Double-edged, power-driven battle-axe forged from Scrap City azure steel, with serrated edges and blood grooves. 701
- Pistol / machine gun — Used while advancing on fortified positions or pursuing enemies through urban areas. 660 704
- Heavy war armor — Scarred plate armor worn over chainmail; its compact energy shield can absorb explosive impacts. 660 1087
- Chain axe and cleaver — Additional weapons carried crossed behind his back. 1087
- Leather-bound book — Recovered from a human cathedral and retained because Quillsana might be able to read it. 661
Relationships
- Guk — Overlord, former rival, and the only Ork Grak openly recognizes as his superior. Grak has served as Guk's loyal assault leader and attempted to protect him from the Guk-shaped daemon. 22 887 893
- Beluf — Longstanding rival. Their opposing approaches to warfare repeatedly caused conflict, including major duels at the Golden Palace and during the Tyre Incident. 195 278 1122
- Kro — Grak's capable second-in-command. Kro advised Grak to initiate the factory assault and saved him during Kasko's ambush. 701 703
- Mogtrakka — Guk's Mork's Chosen. Grak resents Mogtrakka's authority and briefly strangled him while demanding access to Guk. 893
- Quillsana — Harpy recorder and intelligence asset. Grak initially treated her as a possible pet for Guk, then assigned her to locate Yushikin and included her in his war council. 650 653
- Batka — Fellow Ork subordinate and battlefield ally. Batka stole Pheromond's head after Grak killed the cult archbishop. 857
- Yalide — Blades of Delirium opponent. Their duel left Grak severely wounded before he defeated Yalide with AAAGH Energy and Ripper. 635
- Charkin — Silver Guard leader who intervened during Grak's duel with Beluf by killing Camille, preventing Grak's incapacitation from becoming fatal. 1122 1123
Story Role / Major Arcs
Early Campaigns
Grak fought under Guk during the wars against the Red Eye and Green Horn Tribes, commanding wagon forces and pursuing enemies personally. At Aswan, he became a frontline terror against human defenders, ignoring gunfire and breaking defensive formations through direct slaughter. 22 44 149
Blood and Sand
As warboss of the Blood Axes, Grak crossed a river ahead of Beluf's intended schedule and led the destruction of human settlements and Jima. He entered the governor's residence alone, revealed his AAAGH Energy to annihilate its defenders, and refused to follow strategic discussions he considered pointless. 267 269 270
Conflict with Beluf
After seizing the Golden Palace, Grak and Beluf came to blows over Grak's deviation from the larger campaign plan. Their brawl devastated the palace and escalated into clashes between their legions. 277 278 279
Great Rebellion and Pacification
During the Great Rebellion, Grak reacted with fury to news of traitorous Orks. After the war, he personally executed captured traitors for three days without sleep, food, or drink, reportedly killing tens of thousands. 554 625
He later fought Blades of Delirium forces during the rebellion's pacification, including the near-fatal duel with Yalide. 631 635
Metokya and the Factory Assassination Attempts
Grak led the assault on Metokya City, clearing its cathedral alongside his bodyguards and keeping a recovered human book rather than burning it. 660 661
During the factory offensive, he led the Goff Legion's melee breakthrough but was ambushed in succession by Kasko, the Silent Crows, and Aio's assassination team. Though temporarily incapacitated by coordinated sniper fire, he recovered and resumed his rampage. 701 703 705
Tyre Campaign and Power Struggle
Known as the Red Demon, Grak led the Butchers in the assault on Tyre, killing a Wolverine Wizard, a human lieutenant, and Blood-Worship Cult archbishop Pheromond. 856 857
During the Tyre Incident, Grak exploited the destruction caused by the Death Plague Virus to displace Beluf. He executed human lords, denounced Beluf's Harpy allies as traitors, declared himself the new Beast, and gained the upper hand in their duel before Camille's intervention. 1120 1122
Notable Quotes
“I'm da biggest Ork here, which means I'm da boss of all you lousy gits!” 267
“You can howl all you want, because Shrimp can't understand how great the Boss's plan is.” 1122
Trivia
- Grak considers human flesh unpleasant; after chewing a severed finger during the Battle for Aswan, he spat it out and complained about the taste. 64
- He hates being credited with luck as a shooter and wishes his axe could fly into enemies' heads instead. 660
- He once proposed a contest to climb Bloodfang Fort, with the winner receiving a chance to join his elite Blood Axe Group. 28
- His title Red Butcher was already widely recognized by the time of the factory assassination attempts. 704
