Level 1 Awakened were considered strong wherever they went, and they were not common. At least, they were rare in a border town like Creekwood Town.
Lord Leyton did not have many Level 1 Awakened under his command either. Ruwen was merely an Apprentice Awakened, far weaker than a Level 1 Awakened.
Yet merely by virtue of being an Apprentice Awakened, he had earned Lord Leyton's regard, gained considerable authority, and worked for him.
When Ruwen heard Duke readily admit it, the interest in his eyes deepened.
He swung down from his horse, his tall frame wrapped in polished scale armor. A heavy warhammer hung at his waist, and he radiated an iron-blooded air.
He walked up to Duke, slightly restraining his imposing manner. He could be arrogant toward others, but before a genuine Level 1 Awakened, he still had to show some respect.
The pedestrians around them unconsciously retreated a few steps. They did not know how strong a Level 1 Awakened was, but they knew exactly how miserable the consequences of angering Ruwen could be.
"A Level 1 Awakened is a rare sight on this frontier." Ruwen's voice was deep and resonant. "My name is Ruwen, captain of Lord Leyton's guard. Are you interested in joining us?"
Duke shook his head. "I've grown used to being free and undisciplined."
"The forest has been restless lately. Lord Leyton is eager to recruit talented people, especially Awakened with strength like yours. Rather than trying your luck at Goosepeak Fort, why not serve the lord directly? You certainly won't be treated poorly, and we need people badly right now."
His gaze swept over the patrolling soldiers. They all wore standard leather armor and looked well fed, showing that the benefits truly were decent.
