Next came the official classes. The teachers covered much the same material as before, but the workload had been greatly reduced, with more Spirit Studies classes added.
Subjects like physics, chemistry, biology, history, geography, and politics had all become minor subjects. They would be tested uniformly during the second year of high school and would not count toward the National College Entrance Examination scores.
Only Chinese, math, foreign language, and Spirit Studies counted toward the National College Entrance Examination. Although they only made up forty percent, they still could not be neglected.
The last class of the morning was taught by their homeroom teacher, Lin Kai. With only three minutes left before class ended, he announced from the podium, "This afternoon, we'll conduct basic tests on everyone's Pokémon to get an idea of their levels."
"I hope everyone brings their Pokémon this afternoon. Don't forget. If you do, bear the consequences yourselves."
On the way to the cafeteria, Liu Bin curiously asked Sun Le, "Hey, what kind of Pokémon do you have? I've never seen it."
Sun Le answered, "I chose a two-star Mankey from the Pokémon the school arranged for us."
Liu Bin exclaimed, "That's awesome, Sun Le! I remember the school rules say that the top twenty students in the grade can choose a Pokémon for free. Your grades are really good."
Sun Le said, "My dream is to become a trainer, but my family isn't well-off, so I can only rely on my grades to earn scholarships."
Liu Bin said enviously, "With your grades, you're probably among the very best in Spirit Studies. You'll probably be getting scholarships every semester until your hands go numb."
Sun Le said, "Well, not necessarily. The final scores take actual combat into account, and I'm not that strong in battles. It'll probably be difficult."
Jiang Jing said, "As long as you work hard. Since your academic performance is so good, you can't be too bad at Pokémon battles either."
At the same time, a group of Spirit Studies teachers were also heading to the cafeteria.
One heavily made-up, plump female teacher said, "Hey, do you think anyone in this batch will have a Pokémon that breaks through Level 16?"
A teacher wearing a basketball jersey said, "Probably. Last year's second-years had several whose Pokémon were already Level 16 during the first test. They're all members of the school team now."
A tall, thin female teacher said, "You can usually get your starter Pokémon at the beginning of June. With three months and good training conditions, reaching Level 16 isn't actually difficult."
"I'll be satisfied if there's even one Level 16 Pokémon in my class this time."
One of the plump female teachers asked Lin Kai, "Old Lin, what about you?"
Lin Kai said, "Me? I don't really care. I'll be happy if there are, but it's fine if there aren't. Just teach them well. Even if they lose at the starting line, it doesn't matter. They just need to work hard afterward."
Another teacher said, "You really have a good attitude. I don't have that kind of mindset."
A hint of smugness appeared in the plump female teacher's eyes. "I think two students in our Class Two will probably have fairly high initial test levels."
One teacher widened his eyes. "Really? Two of them? Your luck is too good."
As the teachers began discussing it enthusiastically, Lin Kai let out a breath. He truly did not care. Several of these teachers did not think much of him and would mock him openly or subtly. He was already prepared for it.
At that moment, a somewhat chubby male teacher said, "Teacher Lin, I heard you transferred to Spirit Studies suddenly. Why did you decide to come over so suddenly?"
Here it comes, Lin Kai thought.
So he said, "I just suddenly figured it out. There wasn't any earth-shattering reason."
That teacher continued, "I heard Teacher Lin has a pretty good relationship with the principal. Normally, teachers who want to become homeroom teachers in Spirit Studies have to go through several procedures. Without two years of evaluation, they can't get in at all."
After he said that, several teachers looked at Lin Kai strangely.
Lin Kai frowned. This guy has bad intentions.
Those words had clearly been a jab at him for using connections to transfer into Spirit Studies. Everyone knew that being a homeroom teacher in Spirit Studies was especially lucrative. The salary alone was several times that of teachers in the humanities and science departments. Everyone wanted to teach in Spirit Studies.
But it was not something one could enter just by wanting to. Several procedures were required.
When he transferred to Spirit Studies, he had heard that someone else had originally been supposed to transfer over. But because he had suddenly joined Spirit Studies, that other teacher had lost the spot. Could this man be connected to him somehow?
Lin Kai said, "I transferred to Spirit Studies through the normal procedures. There is no doubt about that."
"None of you have met me before, so you don't know me very well. I believe that after some time, you'll understand what kind of person I am."
The Spirit Studies building had ten floors. The first six were classrooms for students, but above the sixth floor, things were different.
That was where the school leadership offices were located. Besides that, the equipment, instruments, and training facilities were all upstairs as well.
When Class Nine arrived, they saw a sign hanging over the entrance: Equipment Room.
Through the doorway, they could see that the room was exceptionally spacious, filled with all kinds of strangely shaped equipment whose purposes were unknown.
Discussion filled the room. Once they entered, they saw a long line in front of a massive white machine.
The white machine was enormous, roughly the size of two vending machines.
The device was divided into two parts. First was the huge circular base beside it, large enough to almost fit a car.
The base was connected to the machine beside it, giving the whole thing a square shape. It had a twelve-inch screen on top and buttons of various colors below.
Each student released their Pokémon and had it stand on the circular base. They pulled out two black circular pads and attached them to the Pokémon, after which a white prism-shaped device above scanned it from head to toe.
Then the machine beside it displayed an image and information about the Pokémon, such as its height, weight, and level. It did not show talent.
Liu Bin introduced it to Sun Le from the side. "This testing device is called the Pokémon Detection Machine. It's mainly used to measure a Pokémon's basic data, such as height, weight, and most importantly, level."
"One Pokémon Detection Machine supposedly costs more than 1.5 million to make. I heard our school has two: this one that's currently in use, and another as a backup."
Lin Kai told everyone in Class Nine, "Go line up first."
Everyone formed a long queue. The testing was not fast; each Pokémon took a full minute, and some students had more than one Pokémon.
As Class Nine waited in line, they watched the levels of the Pokémon being tested ahead of them.
Liu Bin asked Sun Le curiously, "Do you know what level your Pokémon is?"
Sun Le shook his head. "No. I could only estimate that it should be around Level 13."
Liu Bin said, "My Shinx should be around the same level too."
Then he asked Jiang Jing, "What about you, Brother Jing?"
