Pick a target.
Uchiha Feiyun took the stack of intelligence and flipped through it page by page. The Bounty Exchange truly was formidable.
Every bounty poster contained detailed information on the target, along with a photograph.
Hiruzen Sarutobi: 80 million taels. Asuma Sarutobi: 35 million taels. Sarutobi: 139 million taels. Sarutobi Quji: 12 million taels. Feiyun's heart trembled as he read. The Sarutobi Clan really was worth a fortune!
Yet there were not many bounty posters targeting members of the Sarutobi Clan. Perhaps that was the intimidation of the Shinobi World's foremost great clan. After all, they were a top-tier family with three thousand shinobi. Who in the Shinobi World could rival them?
Hmm, him it was!
Sarutobi Jiri, Konoha special jōnin, 4.5 million taels.
Uchiha Feiyun picked out a bounty poster and said so.
Que Ni nodded and quickly wrote something in his notebook.
A moment later, Que Ni pulled out a spare bounty poster from the original files and handed it to Feiyun. "Come back in two days, nameless brother. You can collect the intelligence from the reserve files then."
"Two days?"
"Yes. It takes time for our Bounty Exchange to obtain intelligence on a target's whereabouts. Usually, only after someone accepts a bounty mission do our intelligence agents begin their work."
Feiyun nodded. "I see. Then what if I want to post a bounty mission now?"
The smile on Que Ni's face deepened, as though he had already caught the scent of money.
He skillfully took out a simple form. "Just write down the target you wish to place a bounty on and the reward you're offering."
"But I must make this clear beforehand. Our Bounty Exchange charges a ten-percent commission on the bounty. And whether the mission succeeds or fails, that commission will not be refunded."
"Fine. Uchiha."
Feiyun picked up the pen and began writing down the names he knew.
One name after another appeared on the page, like Death calling roll.
There were people from the Sarutobi Clan, the Shimura Clan, Koharu, and Mitokado. Regardless of age or gender, regardless of whether they were jōnin or genin, civilians were worth 100,000 taels, genin 500,000 taels, and chūnin 1 million taels.
As he watched Uchiha Feiyun keep filling in the form, Que Ni's eyes narrowed into slits, and delight flickered across his face. Making friends with this guy was definitely worth it. This is all white silver and performance credit! With this many bounties, I've got enough results for the next half year. I'll finally be able to stand tall at headquarters.
And my request for a female secretary—I'll see who still dares object.
Today really is a wonderful day.
Feiyun stopped writing and thought for a moment. Then his eyes flashed. "Oh, right. There's that brat too!"
He continued writing on the form: Konohamaru, 1 million taels!
Konohamaru was only three or four years old at this point. With such a high bounty, someone would surely be willing to take the risk. Feiyun truly wanted to see Hiruzen Sarutobi's expression when he lost his only grandson.
Looking at the paper and pen in his hand, Feiyun could not help sighing. "Money makes the world go round. It's the same everywhere."
As long as there was money, the lives of ordinary people were nothing more than a string of numbers in someone else's eyes. That was even more true in this cannibalistic Shinobi World.
The fact that even six-year-old children had to go to war made that cruel reality all the more naked and bloody.
"Alright, that's all I can think of for now."
Feiyun handed the list to Que Ni, whose smiling eyes nearly squeezed shut.
"Good, good. I'll immediately send these bounty posters to headquarters. I'm sure results will come before long."
Indeed, Que Ni did not ask who was being targeted or why these people had been targeted. The Bounty Exchange did not care about such matters. Even if someone posted a bounty on the Sage of Six Paths, the Bounty Exchange only cared about the money and about finding someone to complete the objective. After all, if a bounty remained unfinished for too long, the client could cancel it, which would also damage the Bounty Exchange's reputation.
After calculating for a moment, Que Ni looked up and smiled. "Nameless brother, the total bounty amount you need to pay is 36 million taels. With an additional 3.6 million taels in commission, the total comes to 39.6 million taels."
Hearing that number, Uchiha Feiyun's brow twitched, and his heart ached a little.
Damn, my hand was too fast. Writing in the Book of Life and Death felt great for a moment, but I didn't expect to spend it all in one go.
"I have 40 million taels. No need to make change!"
Feigning calm, Feiyun took out 40 million taels from the large chest to pay the bounty. "Keep the remaining 400,000 taels. Consider it my treat for the Bounty Exchange brothers to have some tea."
Feiyun waved his hand grandly as he spoke.
"Then I'll thank you on everyone's behalf, nameless brother. We'll meet again in two days. When the time comes, I'll treat you to a drink. I'll be leaving now."
Uchiha Feiyun walked out of the secret chamber and headed toward the Bounty Exchange entrance.
Que Ni, his eyes narrowed in a smile, escorted him all the way to the door before turning back.
Uchiha Feiyun left the temple carrying the noticeably lighter chest. He shook his head with a bitter smile. "Still, I have 10 million taels left. That's enough for me to build myself up for now."
"I should buy some weapons and ninja tools first. I also need to stock up on explosive tags. Those things really can blow people to death."
Uchiha Feiyun intended to hunt Konoha shinobi for money while using the money he earned to place bounties on members of the four great clans. If everything went smoothly, it would form a positive cycle.
As long as enough money was invested, they would not feel safe even if they stayed in Konoha, let alone left it. After all, even genin and civilians could be targets any bounty hunter had a chance of taking down. Konoha had people coming and going every day, and bounty hunters were mixed into every trade and profession. Infiltrating Konoha would be no trouble at all unless Konoha sealed off the village and cut off contact with everyone and every industry.
But if that happened, every faction and clan would have objections, because it would affect the interests of every family and every person in Konoha. Damaging the interests of the entire village for the safety of one's own clan would, first, provoke public outrage, and second, earn everyone's contempt. If they could not even deal with a few assassins, the prestige of the four great clans would suffer.
An evil smile curled across Uchiha Feiyun's lips. If you won't let me live well, then none of you will live well either.
Konoha's Uchiha Itachi and Obito were both far too powerful. Neither was easy to deal with.
But it was not as though there was no way forward. Konoha might be unable to deal with those masterminds for the moment, but I could start with the people beneath them in their clans.
Uchiha Itachi, I can't beat you for now, but I can kill your little brother!
Uchiha Obito.
