Ch. 121Doflamingo's Fear
Key plot points and events
- Doflamingo realizes that Natsu could kill him instantly, before he could react or use Conqueror’s Haki. Natsu, however, has already left Dressrosa.
- Natsu watches the island’s apparently content people and decides their fate is not his concern. He spared Doflamingo because the underworld broker’s extensive connections and supply network could serve the Uchiha Clan—not out of sympathy for Dressrosa.
- Natsu warns, in effect, that he will not show Luffy mercy if Luffy interferes with the Uchiha. His friendship with Ace does not make Luffy untouchable.
- On Banaro Island, Ace senses something wrong but finds Teach and his officers waiting for him. After pursuing Teach for more than six months, Ace ignores the likelihood of a trap and confronts him over Thatch’s murder.
- Teach admits killing Thatch to take the Dark-Dark Fruit and argues that the strong should rule. He then offers Ace a place in his crew, promising power and shared dominion over the seas.
Character developments
- Natsu is presented as pragmatic, ruthless, and chiefly loyal to the Uchiha Clan. He judges people by their usefulness and rejects the idea that he must rescue strangers.
- Doflamingo recognizes his vulnerability before Natsu, but remains valuable enough to be spared—for now.
- Ace is consumed by grief and anger over Thatch’s death. Despite recognizing Teach’s setup, he charges ahead rather than retreating.
- Teach reveals both his ambition and his manipulative streak: he boasts about betrayal, then switches to a calculated recruitment pitch.
Significant themes
- Power and self-interest: Both Natsu and Teach treat strength and usefulness as the basis for action and loyalty.
- Moral responsibility: Natsu explicitly refuses to intervene in Dressrosa’s suffering, contrasting with the impulse to protect others associated with Luffy.
- Betrayal and revenge: Ace’s pursuit of Teach is driven by Thatch’s murder, while Teach shows no remorse.
- Manipulation and ambition: Teach uses an offer of partnership to exploit Ace’s strength, even as they stand on the brink of conflict.
Character interactions
- Natsu and Doflamingo: Their relationship is one of coercive pragmatism: Doflamingo is spared because he can benefit the Uchiha, and Natsu expects obedience.
- Natsu and Luffy: Natsu regards Luffy as a potential obstacle, not someone he owes protection to.
- Ace and Teach: Ace confronts Teach over Thatch; Teach taunts him, justifies the killing, and tries to recruit him before the fight begins.
- Teach and his officers: The Blackbeard crew’s relaxed, confident presence confirms that Ace has walked into a deliberate trap.
