Background

Nami was orphaned when pirates attacked her birthplace during her infancy. Bell-mère, a Marine, found Nami and Nojiko among the ruins, brought them to Cocoyasi Village, and raised them as her daughters. Growing up, Nami developed a dream of drawing a map of the world. 6

When Nami was ten, Arlong and the Arlong Pirates occupied Cocoyasi Village. Bell-mère used her limited savings to pay the protection money for Nami and Nojiko, and Arlong killed her for it. Recognizing Nami’s exceptional ability to draw nautical charts, Arlong forced her to serve as his cartographer, promising that she could purchase the village’s freedom for 100 million Beli. 6

For years, Nami endured Arlong’s rule while sailing the East Blue to steal treasure, accumulating money to buy back Cocoyasi Village. She maintained the appearance of an Arlong Pirates member in order to protect the villagers from retaliation. 6 28

Once she sees a genuine chance to destroy the Arlong Pirates, Nami acts decisively. She saves Carina, openly renounces Arlong’s crew, and accepts the danger of retaliation against herself and the village. 30 31

Arlong Park Conflict

Nami returns to Arlong Park after stealing treasure elsewhere in the East Blue and is shocked to find Li Mingyuan and Carina confronting the Arlong Pirates. Believing Carina to be in danger and unwilling to risk Cocoyasi Village on an unknown fighter, she initially presents herself as an Arlong Pirates member and threatens Li Mingyuan with her staff. 27 28

After Li Mingyuan proves capable of overpowering Arlong, Nami saves Carina from the Fish-Men and formally declares herself an enemy of the Arlong Pirates. She and Carina fight together but are surrounded until Li Mingyuan intervenes. 30 31 32

Following Arlong’s execution, Nami takes his head and leaves Arlong Park to announce the Arlong Pirates’ destruction to Cocoyasi Village and the surrounding area. 35 36

Liberation and Aftermath

Nami thanks Li Mingyuan directly for saving the village and offers her personal savings as a reward. She also asks him to treat Carina leniently after realizing Carina attempted to steal 15 million Beli from him. 39

She assists in recovering and sorting Arlong Park’s treasure, then privately burns the sea charts she was forced to create for Arlong. 40 43
