Chen Yu put away the medical certificate the district chief had given him and asked, "Careful of what?"
"The hospitals and the Repair Center." The district chief gave a bitter smile. "The hospitals in the Lower District have already been monopolized by the Central District. You came in without paying them a visit first. They won't let you off easily."
"I have to pay them a visit?"
"Yes. You need to join the local Labor Union and hand over nine-tenths of your income as membership dues before you can take the medical assessment. Pass that, and you'll be qualified to treat tenth-class citizens, which pays better. Then you'll have to prescribe a certain number of painkillers every month. Otherwise, they'll expel you, and you'll have to do thirty days of unpaid work for the association before you can rejoin."
Chen Yu stared at the district chief in confusion. "What benefits do I get from joining this Labor Union?"
"You won't be harassed. The local Labor Union sends people with difficult cases to bother you. Once you join, that won't be a problem."
"That's it?"
"That's it."
Seeing Chen Yu's bewildered expression, the district chief explained, "Medical school costs a lot, and training takes years. Once doctors graduate, they need to earn money. You showed up out of nowhere and took their business. Of course they won't stand for it. I asked around. Your treatments are blunt but quick and effective. The problem is that you work so fast, everyone else is earning a lot less. Complaints about you and your partners have been piling up."
"Oh. So being good at my job was a mistake?"
The district chief smiled awkwardly. "Or you could sell medicines from the Physicians' Guild alongside your treatments. Each prescription costs three
