Background / History

The early Black Miasma Abyss is a bottomless chasm filled with demonic mist, dead cultivators' remains, shattered artifacts, and decayed remnant souls. A mountain-sized demonic silhouette, obscured by mist and bound in black chains, stands at its center. Its pressure reduces a Mid Astral Qi Realm cultivator to trembling submission 178 179.

Long before the present conflict, the Abyss invaded the Heaven-Abandoned Land. The Human Race initially resisted it, but the tide turned after the land's other races—and many humans—joined the Abyss against the Eternal Divine Dynasty 409.

The Abyss functions as a chaotic hub linking the myriad heavens and worlds. Its passages allow Demonic Beasts and fallen experts to invade other worlds, while violent Abyss storms make travel through those routes perilous even for powerful cultivators 427.

Appearance & Manifestations

The Abyss does not present a single consistent environment. Its rifts and corrupted territories are associated with darkness, black mist, and oppressive demonic qi, while its interior can be dazzlingly colorful beneath visible sun, moon, and stars 179 425.

• Demonic miasma — Dense demonic qi can become nearly liquid and suppress or empower combatants within its territory 182 184.
• Abyssal rifts — Tears in space through which Demonic Beasts enter invaded worlds; some open and close as gateways for retreating forces 409 413.
• Abyss storms — Violent storms within the Abyss that can tear apart great experts and are avoided even by Abyssal Demonic Beasts 427.

Abilities & Influence

Corruption and Demon Ascension

Beings that fall into the Abyss are normally corrupted and assimilated. Fallen beings can undergo Demon Ascension, remaking their bodies and gaining power; the scale of slaughter and sacrifice determines the reward granted by the Abyss 423.

• Even experts beyond the Divine Repository Realm are recorded as unable to resist Abyssal corrosion 425.
• Fallen Ones may sacrifice their original worlds, then travel to other realms to pursue further power and profit 519.
• Sacrificing conquered land weakens that world's Heavenly Dao and earns rewards from the Abyss 525.
• Li Xuancang is an anomaly: he entered the Abyss without being corrupted, possibly because he is not from the Heaven-Abandoned Land 425.

Abyssal Will

The Abyssal Will is the supreme force that directs and rewards the Abyss's followers. When Nanli Great Sage invoked it, Demonic Beasts and Dharma Body Realm followers immediately prostrated themselves as though before their creator 525.

• It can forcibly open passages between worlds while cutting off or resisting a world's Heavenly Dao 525.
• It drives the expansion of Abyssal darkness and commands Demonic Beasts to defend threatened rifts 545.
• Demonic Beasts and fallen creatures gradually lose themselves to the Will, placing the Abyss above all else 562.
• The Will's presence can be resisted: Li Xuancang suppressed its influence through his blood and qi rather than kneeling with the other invaders 525.

Abyssal Mark

The Abyssal Mark is a punitive manifestation of the Will's attention, created after someone slays a sufficient number of Abyssal Demonic Beasts 556.

• A Marked One is rejected by the Abyss and cannot conceal their presence within it 556.
• Demonic Beasts are compelled to hunt Marked Ones because killing one earns the Abyssal Will's favor and rewards 556 588.
• The mark makes entering the Abyss exceptionally dangerous, as even Cave Heaven Realm Demonic Beasts may be drawn to the bearer 556 589.
