Hearing that Kingpin had come to her to treat and save someone, Zhao Hailun was not surprised.
In fact, there had been no shortage of people like Kingpin over the past few days.
Over the past half month, Zhao Hailun had cured numerous stubborn ailments such as "rheumatism" and "varicose veins"—conditions that were not considered particularly serious, yet could not be cured.
She had also cured paraplegia and leukemia, genuine human killers and incurable diseases.
At first, those patients had come from Zhao Hailun's own network.
For example, relatives and friends of the research center staff, as well as some of Zhao Hailun's friends.
But later, as Zhao Hailun's reputation continued to grow, that circle had expanded outward like a snowball.
Although Zhao Hailun repeatedly emphasized to every patient that they should keep a low profile and not spread the word, how could something like this possibly be kept under wraps?
Zhao Hailun had inevitably become famous.
People came to seek treatment almost every day.
Zhao Hailun had never turned any of them away.
Naturally, she would not refuse this Wilson Fisk either.
"Mr. Fisk, may I ask what illness your loved one has?"
Seeing how anxious he truly was, Zhao Hailun did not waste any words and immediately asked in a serious tone.
"To be honest, I'm not entirely sure either."
Kingpin shook his head, pain appearing on his face as though he did not wish to recall that scene. "Last night, I was hosting a reception. Vanessa was very happy, and everything was wonderful. But then, all of a sudden, Vanessa collapsed to the floor, foam coming from her mouth..."
Kingpin briefly described what had happened at the reception to Zhao Hailun.
That was right. Kingpin's woman had the same name as Deadpool's woman. All one could say was that the world was an interesting place.
Although Zhao Hailun was not a professional doctor, she did work in biological nanotechnology and understood some common illnesses.
Based on her judgment, Vanessa did not seem to be sick. She seemed more likely to have been poisoned.
Zhao Hailun had never dealt with a poisoning case before.
Even so, she remained quite confident. She could cure even terminal illnesses, so poisoning should not be a problem either.
"Dr. Zhao, time is of the essence. Can you come with me? No matter the outcome, I, Wilson Fisk, will remember this kindness."
Kingpin spoke again, his voice nearly pleading as he addressed Zhao Hailun.
Zhao Hailun did not know Kingpin, so she had no idea just how much weight his promise carried.
But with the intention of treating the sick and saving lives, she agreed without hesitation.
"Mr. Fisk, please lead the way."
Zhao Hailun immediately said to Kingpin, rising to her feet.
"Dr. Zhao, don't you need to prepare anything?"
Wesley, standing beside Kingpin, could not help asking.
Didn't doctors usually carry their own equipment when making house calls?
Otherwise, how were they supposed to conduct examinations?
"I don't need any of that. Let's go!" Zhao Hailun said briskly.
Though he still had some doubts, Kingpin did not say anything else.
As the biggest underground boss in New York and even the entire United States, his vision and courage were beyond comparison with ordinary people.
Since he had sought out Zhao Hailun, he chose to trust her and would not question her lightly.
Kingpin immediately left with Zhao Hailun. His people had already prepared a car below the research center.
The group got into the car and rushed as quickly as possible to an extremely high-end sanatorium in Hell's Kitchen.
They arrived at Vanessa's bedside.
Vanessa lay on the bed with her eyes tightly shut, her face as pale as paper without the slightest trace of color. She was weak to the extreme.
An oxygen mask covered her face, and the condensation on it made it obvious that her breathing was very faint as well.
Before Kingpin had gone to find Zhao Hailun, he had already called in the best doctors he could find. But those doctors could only barely preserve Vanessa's life, nothing more.
They could not save Vanessa's body.
Vanessa would spend the rest of her life in pain and illness.
That was something Kingpin could never accept, so he had mobilized all his resources without hesitation and begun searching for every renowned doctor he could find.
It was under those circumstances that Zhao Hailun entered Kingpin's sight.
"Dr. Zhao, if you need anything, just say the word. I'll have it prepared immediately."
Afraid of waking Vanessa, Kingpin spoke quietly to Zhao Hailun.
"Mr. Fisk, there's no need. I can begin now."
Zhao Hailun waved her hand, then directly pulled back Vanessa's blanket.
She then took Vanessa's hand.
Kingpin: "..."
Wesley: "..."
What was Dr. Zhao doing?
Was she examining Vanessa?
But this kind of examination method was truly unheard of and unseen!
It could even be called bizarre.
Kingpin and Wesley exchanged glances, each seeing uncertainty and suspicion in the other's eyes.
"I'm about to begin. Mr. Fisk, please make sure I'm not disturbed during this time."
Zhao Hailun spoke then, addressing Kingpin and Wesley with a serious expression.
She had already used her ability to carefully sense Vanessa's body and fully understood her condition.
She was certain that she could cure Vanessa.
For her, it was not actually difficult.
"Dr. Zhao, I will. Please begin."
Despite his doubts, Kingpin nodded at Zhao Hailun.
At this point, they had to let Dr. Zhao try, no matter what.
Besides, even if she truly failed, it would only mean that Vanessa had her hand held by another woman. That was all.
There was really nothing to worry about.
Zhao Hailun did not say anything more. She began using her ability on Vanessa, repairing her damaged body bit by bit.
The hospital room became utterly silent; one could hear a needle drop.
Kingpin and Wesley could only stare wide-eyed as Zhao Hailun "caressed" Vanessa.
They scarcely dared to breathe, afraid of disturbing Zhao Hailun.
However, the process did not last long—about three minutes or so.
Vanessa opened her eyes.
Color returned to her face, and she looked full of energy once again.
Feeling someone holding her hand, she looked utterly bewildered.
"Excuse me, but... Wilson?"
Halfway through speaking, Vanessa saw Kingpin standing nearby, his body trembling with excitement.
