Background

After a family conflict in his original life, Shen Jianan is struck by an out-of-control vehicle and dies. He awakens in the summer of 1975 in the body of a minor character from a dark novel, also named Shen Jianan. Knowing that the original Shen Jianan was destined to die after Zhao Jianguo ambushed him and Gu Yu on a mountain path, he resolves to change both his own fate and Gu Yu’s. 1

The body’s original owner was a Hai City educated youth with cadre parents. He had been sent to the countryside in place of his cousin, Shen Jiabao, after his grandparents and uncle manipulated the assignment. Though his parents promised to bring him home after a year, he remained in the countryside for a year and a half. 3

Shen Jianan is assigned to live with Gu Yu in the isolated Half-Mountain Courtyard after conflicts with the other educated youths damage his reputation. Rather than follow the novel’s original plot, he resists the controlling “Plot Lord” system even when doing so causes severe mental strain. 3 5
