"Off work? Want to leave together?"
The young man standing at the pet hospital's front desk had delicate, beautiful features. Under the lights, his skin was fair as jade. Especially his golden curls—they were exceptionally eye-catching.
His thick lashes lifted slightly as he looked toward the colleague standing by the glass doors.
He smiled faintly. "I still have some work to do. You go ahead."
His colleague glanced toward the office at the end of the corridor. The light inside was still on, and he immediately understood.
He winked at Gu Yuechen. "I get it. I won't disturb you two."
Gu Yuechen's cheeks flushed. He hurriedly looked toward the office, then shot his colleague an annoyed, embarrassed glare.
"What nonsense are you talking about? If Doctor Pei hears you, he'll definitely misunderstand."
Wearing an expression that said, "I understand," his colleague waved at Gu Yuechen and left the pet hospital.
Gu Yuechen organized all the documents, then went to the break room to make Pei Huanyi a cup of hot tea.
But just then, the office door opened.
Gu Yuechen hurriedly set down what he was holding and walked to the break room entrance.
"Doctor Pei, would you like some hot tea?"
Pei Huanyi had already taken off his work coat. He wore a finely tailored suit, and the gold-rimmed glasses on his face had yet to be removed. He looked refined and elegant.
Gu Yuechen's breath caught, and he could barely restrain the adoration in his eyes.
"You haven't gotten off work yet?" Pei Huanyi looked slightly startled. He checked his watch. "It's almost seven already."
Pei Huanyi's family was far from poor.
He had opened this pet hospital out of personal interest and did not particularly care about making a profit. Aside from the doctors on duty, most employees could leave at six.
"I just finished organizing today's files and was about to leave. I saw that you were still busy, so I thought I'd make you some hot tea."
Pei Huanyi nodded. "No need for tea. Let's go. I'll drive you home."
Gu Yuechen hurriedly waved his hands. "How could I trouble you with that? I can just take the bus."
"It's on the way." Pei Huanyi helped turn off the break room lights.
Watching Pei Huanyi's back, Gu Yuechen's heart beat a little faster. Suppressing the joy in his heart, he followed behind him.
He had worked here for two years, but he had liked Pei Huanyi for a full five years.
Their first meeting was probably something Pei Huanyi no longer remembered, but Gu Yuechen would never forget it.
When he was nineteen, he had been hit by a car. The driver fled, and he lay by the roadside in despair, waiting for death to come.
It was Pei Huanyi, passing by, who saved him. On the way to the hospital, Pei Huanyi noticed his helplessness and fear. He comforted him gently and held his hand tightly, only letting go when Gu Yuechen was pushed into the operating room.
Pei Huanyi paid for his surgery before leaving, without leaving behind any personal information.
Gu Yuechen had searched for his benefactor ever since, until he ran into Pei Huanyi on the street two years ago and watched him enter this pet hospital.
In order to work at the pet hospital, he had falsified his education and family background. After submitting his résumé several times, he had finally gotten an interview.
The person who interviewed him was Pei Huanyi. His gaze was completely unfamiliar, and he had long forgotten that little incident from years ago.
Gu Yuechen guessed that someone as wonderful as Pei Huanyi had probably helped many people. How could he possibly remember every one of them?
The interview had not gone smoothly. Gu Yuechen had been so nervous that he could barely speak.
Just as Pei Huanyi picked up his fountain pen to mark something on his résumé, a kitten wandered into his office and rubbed against Gu Yuechen's leg.
Gu Yuechen did not like small animals. He had once been chased through several alleys by stray dogs, and had developed a fear of animals because of it.
He suppressed his fear and picked up the kitten, placing it on his lap. His slightly trembling hand stroked its back.
As long as he did not look at Pei Huanyi's face, he would not be so nervous. At last, he could speak.
Gu Yuechen was very good at lying. He fabricated stories about having raised cats and dogs, and claimed to have worked as a receptionist at several stores, assuring Pei Huanyi that he was more than capable of doing the job.
In the end, Gu Yuechen got the job as he wished. Like a filthy, shameless admirer, he stayed in the place closest to Pei Huanyi, crazily coveting his every movement.
"Is it here?"
Pei Huanyi's voice pulled Gu Yuechen back from his thoughts.
He turned to look out the car window, then smiled.
"Yes, my home is in this apartment building." Gu Yuechen unfastened his seat belt. With an imperceptible heat in his gaze, he stared intently at Pei Huanyi. "Doctor Pei, see you tomorrow."
Pei Huanyi gave a brief acknowledgment.
Gu Yuechen got out of the car and waved to the person inside.
Once the car disappeared from sight, the smile vanished from Gu Yuechen's face. He turned and headed into a dark alley.
It took him around twenty minutes to reach the place where he truly lived.
It was an old residential building with a moldy smell.
Gu Yuechen arrived at the pet hospital early again.
He turned on all the lights, then immediately went to Pei Huanyi's office. He gently stroked the desk, imagining Pei Huanyi writing with a fountain pen. A sickly obsession surfaced in his beautiful eyes.
Only when he heard the sound of the outer door opening did Gu Yuechen snap back to his senses and conceal the emotions in his eyes.
He began clearing away the trash on the desk and putting the scattered office supplies back in place.
He was glad he had interviewed for an administrative receptionist position. Even if he spent too long in Pei Huanyi's office, no one would grow suspicious.
When he came out of the office, Pei Huanyi had just arrived as well, and their gazes collided without warning.
Staring into those light-colored eyes, Gu Yuechen's heart began racing uncontrollably.
So... so handsome...
"Good morning." Pei Huanyi spoke first, his voice magnetic.
Gu Yuechen's cheeks reddened. "Good morning, Doctor Pei."
"Have you eaten breakfast?"
The sudden question caught Gu Yuechen off guard.
Just as he was about to lie and say he had eaten, Pei Huanyi held out the breakfast he was carrying to him.
"The clerk got it wrong. I don't like it, so you can have it."
Gu Yuechen quickly accepted it and smiled at Pei Huanyi.
"Thank you. I'll enjoy it."
Pei Huanyi nodded and walked around him into the office.
Gu Yuechen returned to his workstation and ate the breakfast Pei Huanyi had given him with a smile in his eyes.
Xu Rui, the colleague who had teased him yesterday, noticed it. He came over to the front desk and propped his face up with one hand.
"That breakfast belongs to Doctor Pei, right? So he bought it especially for you."
Gu Yuechen was startled by his words. He looked around and, seeing that the other coworkers were not paying attention, lowered his voice. "Stop saying that. It wouldn't be good if someone misunderstood."
Gu Yuechen had originally planned to keep his feelings for Pei Huanyi hidden in his heart and tell no one.
But Xu Rui was too perceptive. He had noticed it within half a year of Gu Yuechen joining the job.
Fortunately, Xu Rui knew where to draw the line and had not told anyone about it. At most, he would gossip with Gu Yuechen about it in private.
Xu Rui lowered his voice as well. "Actually, you could try confessing to him. You can't keep secretly loving him forever, can you? I think he probably likes you too. You're the one he treats most specially."
Gu Yuechen smiled, but his eyes dimmed. "Forget it. How could someone like me ever be worthy of him?"
Xu Rui shook his head in disagreement. "How are you not worthy of him? If you don't fight for it, how will you know what the outcome will be? Doctor Pei is twenty-eight this year, right? Aren't you afraid he'll marry someone else?"
Gu Yuechen suddenly clenched the sandwich in his hand.
After a long while, he smiled faintly. "We'll talk about it later."
Xu Rui wanted to say more, but a customer came in just then, so they had no choice but to end the conversation.
Because of Xu Rui's words, Gu Yuechen was distracted for the entire day.
That was right. What if Pei Huanyi got married?
Had he falsified his résumé just so he could stay by Pei Huanyi's side and work here?
He was unwilling to settle for that.
Maybe I should try.
By evening, most of the coworkers had left. Gu Yuechen remained at his workstation, planning to wait for Pei Huanyi to come out of his office. Then he would create an opportunity to be alone with him and confess.
But the arrival of one person disrupted his plan.
"Where's Pei Huanyi?" Xie Wangchi strode in, rapping his knuckles against the front desk. His handsome face was arrogant. "Is he still here?"
Xie Wangchi was Pei Huanyi's friend, but Gu Yuechen did not like him.
Back when he had been trying to get close to Pei Huanyi, he had once tried to ingratiate himself with Xie Wangchi.
But Xie Wangchi had seen through his intentions at a glance. He looked Gu Yuechen over from head to toe as though he were looking at garbage.
He warned Gu Yuechen to put away thoughts he should not have. Someone like him had no right to get close to Pei Huanyi.
So Gu Yuechen categorized Xie Wangchi as a romantic rival.
Only a romantic rival would speak to him so viciously, wanting to keep Pei Huanyi all to himself.
Gu Yuechen did not even glance at Xie Wangchi. "He's in his office."
Xie Wangchi clicked his tongue. After taking two steps, he suddenly turned back.
"Do you know why I came here today?"
Gu Yuechen still ignored him.
Xie Wangchi was not angry. He continued, "His fiancée has returned to the country. I came to pick her up from the airport with him."
The pen in Gu Yuechen's hand fell and hit the floor.
