Gu Yuechen only glanced at it before putting his phone down.

He had always thought Yu Yaochen was a stupid rich guy, but now it seemed the real idiot was himself.

Yu Yaochen had discovered long ago that his address was fake, yet he had often driven him "home," watching him pretend to enter that upscale apartment building.

Maybe he had been laughing at his stupidity all along. Gu Yuechen had thought he could fool everyone, but how could someone living in that apartment building wear clothes that cost less than a hundred yuan?

Even the sneakers on his feet were some unknown cheap brand.

Only he had thought his act was convincing. For all he knew, a whole group of people, Xie Wangchi included, had been watching him make a fool of himself.

Gu Yuechen pressed his lips together. Then, suddenly, he picked up his phone and deleted Yu Yaochen's message.

Out of sight, out of mind.

Gu Yuechen played ostrich for two days. That evening, after getting off work, he headed to the bus stop.

Sitting on the bench, he lowered his head and messaged his grandmother.

Then a pair of clean, expensive sneakers entered his field of vision. Gu Yuechen's fingers paused over his phone screen, and he looked up at their owner.

Perhaps it was just his imagination, but Yu Yaochen, who had always seemed gentle and considerate in his memories, looked somewhat cold and grim at that moment. His cool features appeared even sharper in the night.

Gu Yuechen moved his lips, but before he could make a sound, Yu Yaochen sat down beside him and took hold of his left hand, the one not holding the phone.

"Yuechen, are you still angry with me?" Yu Yaochen's voice was slightly low, though still pleasant to hear. "Why haven't you replied to my messages?"

Gu Yuechen turned his head to study Yu Yaochen's expression. The emotion he had seen earlier was gone, replaced only by grievance and sadness.

He frowned and tried to pull his hand free, but Yu Yaochen gripped it even tighter.

"Let go," Gu Yuechen said through gritted teeth.

"What do I have to do for you to forgive me?" There was a trace of pleading in Yu Yaochen's voice.

That only made Gu Yuechen angrier. His beautiful eyes widened.

"You knew my home wasn't there, so why did you still drive me to the apartment entrance every day? Did you find it especially amusing to watch me put on a free performance?"

Yu Yaochen shook his head. "I just hadn't figured out how to bring it up. I thought that once you trusted and relied on me enough, you would tell me on your own."

He pressed his lips together, turned slightly toward Gu Yuechen, and looked directly into his eyes.

"I'm sorry. The way I handled it made you uncomfortable."

Yu Yaochen looked utterly sincere, without even a hint of mockery or pity, as though they were discussing the matter naturally.

But that made Gu Yuechen feel even worse.

Sure enough, he was inferior to Yu Yaochen in every way. He even began to doubt whether what he had done was right.

Deep down, he knew perfectly well that aside from not loving Pei Huanyi, Yu Yaochen was outstanding in every other respect.

Perhaps it was his interference that had pushed Pei Huanyi completely toward misery.

Thinking of that, Gu Yuechen once again tried to pull his hand away.

Seeing this, Yu Yaochen interlaced their fingers and held on tightly.

"Yuechen, can you forgive me?" Yu Yaochen said. "I couldn't see you or reach you these past few days. I was going crazy. I was so afraid you'd ask to break up with me."

Gu Yuechen's expression grew complicated. "I'm not good enough for you in any way. Do you still want to stay with me?"

"I only want you. I don't want to consider external factors."

Gu Yuechen sneered inwardly.

What an idiot.

"I can give you time to calm down some more, but we can't break up." Yu Yaochen's fingers tightened, gripping Gu Yuechen's hand hard enough to hurt. "Conflicts are unavoidable in a relationship. I hope we can solve our conflicts together, rather than solve the person."

The hand Yu Yaochen was holding happened to be the one wearing a ring, and its cold, hard touch kept reminding Gu Yuechen.

No matter how outstanding Yu Yaochen was, he was already tainted.

He had long ceased to be worthy of Pei Huanyi.

"Will you really call off the engagement?" Gu Yuechen suddenly asked.

Yu Yaochen noticed Gu Yuechen staring at the ring on his hand. After a brief hesitation, he removed it, slipped it into his pocket, and took Gu Yuechen's hand again.

"I will." Yu Yaochen's tone was solemn. "I promise you."

Gu Yuechen curved his lips slightly and did not struggle free again.

"Okay."

Yu Yaochen let out a breath, and at last, a smile appeared on his face.

"Are you hungry?" Yu Yaochen looked at him gently. "I'll take you to eat."

"No." Gu Yuechen shook his head. "I'm going back tonight."

"Come on. I'll drive you."

Gu Yuechen no longer needed to keep pretending, so he told Yu Yaochen his real address.

In the car, Gu Yuechen stared at Yu Yaochen's profile.

"Did you find out on the day you went to visit your teacher's house?"

Yu Yaochen slowly nodded. "Yeah."

Gu Yuechen wore an expression that said he had known it, and his words became sharp and biting again.

"My act was too clumsy. I must have made a fool of myself. Tell me honestly, didn't you look down on someone like me back then?"

"No." Without the slightest hesitation, Yu Yaochen answered, "I only thought you must have had your own difficulties."

Gu Yuechen was suddenly left speechless. His mood felt stifled as he turned to look out the car window.

This trip took longer than the previous ones. After they passed the upscale apartment building, the farther they drove in, the darker the road became.

They finally arrived at the residential building Gu Yuechen had mentioned. Looking through the windshield, Yu Yaochen frowned slightly.

The environment really was a little awful. The building looked like it might collapse.

Who knew whether it was safe?

"I'm here." Gu Yuechen unfastened his seatbelt. "Doesn't it look shabby and poor?"

Yu Yaochen did not answer the question directly. "Once the engagement is called off, let's live together."

Gu Yuechen froze for a moment. Once he processed it, he found it a little funny.

"To tell you the truth, I made up all the family relations on my résumé." Gu Yuechen was a strange person—when he tore open his own wounds, he actually found it especially satisfying. "My parents abandoned me when I was born. My grandmother raised me. So if you want to live with me, you'll have to take my grandmother in too."

"Sure." Yu Yaochen seemed to be seriously considering it, a smile at the corner of his lips. "I'll buy a bigger place then, and the three of us can live together."

Gu Yuechen choked up. He no longer wanted to talk to Yu Yaochen.

"We'll talk about it later. I'm going back."

After tossing out those words, Gu Yuechen fled as though escaping a venomous snake.

Yu Yaochen was a brainless idiot with something wrong with his head!

So annoying!
