A few days later, Shi Sheng was a little dazed when he received a video call.
A formal voice came from the other end. "Is this Shi Yi? This is the Security Department of the Capital Military Academy. Please come to the First Medical Center immediately. There is an issue with your autonomous driving program, which caused a cadet to be injured."
Shi Sheng instantly sobered up. He nodded hard, ended the call, and hurriedly got dressed.
What did they mean, his program had caused a cadet to get hurt? His brother had not told him the academy's rules before leaving, and Shi Sheng was completely lost.
He should go to the hospital first.
He threw on a jacket and rushed outside. After some effort, he found Merico and asked him to prepare a vehicle.
"No problem, Madam. The family head previously prepared a personal aircraft for you. I'll have it brought out right away."
Only then did Shi Sheng remember Elaine mentioning that the smaller aircraft was for him. He rarely went out, and when he did, it was usually with Elaine, so he had never had the chance to use it.
"Please wait. I'll send someone with you." Merico stopped Shi Sheng just as he was about to board the aircraft. "The family head said you may go out freely, but if I fail to arrange protection for you, that would be a dereliction of my duty."
Shi Sheng paused. Then his wristband suddenly received several more messages.
They were from Ji Sui. He had also been present when the accident happened and was urging Shi Sheng to get to the hospital quickly.
Shi Sheng could not be bothered to reply. Merico soon summoned two Betas and accompanied Shi Sheng out.
Just as the aircraft departed, Yumian returned through the main gate. "Who went out?"
Merico replied, "Madam. It seems he was summoned by the military academy."
Yumian frowned. He had not intended to interfere, but halfway through, he changed direction and returned to his own vehicle.
"I'll go take a look. Remember to tell Big Brother."
"Of course." In truth, Merico had already sent Elaine a message.
When Shi Sheng arrived at the medical center, everyone except Ji Sui was unfamiliar.
The group all seemed to be from the military academy. Several young people in cadet uniforms waited anxiously outside the operating room.
The moment they saw Shi Sheng, they immediately strode over.
"Shi Yi! You finally showed up!"
"What's going on with you? Why did you take leave?"
"Even if you got married, you should still take things seriously! How could you submit the wrong program?"
"Lin Chi still hasn't passed the critical stage. You need to give us an explanation!"
The accusations made Shi Sheng's temples throb. He looked around and found someone from the Security Department.
The person in charge checked his wristband. "Shi Yi, right? During the mech operation class today, a mech loaded with your program malfunctioned. It fell from the air. We have already conducted an assessment, and the issue was with the program settings."
"We didn't call you here to hold you accountable. We just want to understand the situation."
Shi Sheng frowned and picked up his voice device. "How is that cadet doing?"
"What are you doing, Shi Yi?" a cadet beside him asked unhappily. "Why are you fiddling with that thing at a time like this?"
Shi Sheng ignored him and merely looked at the person in charge.
The person in charge glanced at his voice device and said, "When he fell, a machine part punctured a major artery. He is not out of danger yet."
Shi Sheng's heart jolted. He hurriedly asked, "What can I do?"
The other cadets said, "Of course you need to explain yourself!"
"Exactly. Even if we take a step back, your lack of ability caused this. You need to take responsibility!"
"If something happens to Lin Chi..."
The originally quiet corridor filled with noisy voices.
Ji Sui stepped forward, seemingly trying to help. "All right, all right, everyone calm down. I'm sure Xiao Yi won't avoid responsibility."
Shi Sheng looked silently at Ji Sui for a while, then walked to one side with the person in charge.
Only then did he learn that the military academy held an academic presentation at the beginning of every semester. Cadets in the information technology department were responsible for writing programs, while those in the mech department handled practical operations.
Normally, those practical sessions were not especially difficult. Besides, Shi Yi's year was no longer made up of freshmen. There should not have been an accident like this.
Shi Sheng did not believe there was anything wrong with his program, especially since Elaine had guided him through it.
"I want to see that mech," he said through his voice device.
The person in charge looked troubled. "Since this was a safety accident, it has already been handed over to the Capital Police Bureau for storage."
Shi Sheng frowned. "But I need to confirm that it was my program."
"Of course, but..."
"The patient needs a blood transfusion! Is there anyone with Type B blood?"
A voice interrupted their conversation.
Shi Sheng and the person in charge hurried back, only to hear everyone asking questions at once.
"Doesn't the medical center have blood? Why do they need someone else to donate?"
"I'm not Type B. Are you?"
"I'm Type O. Can Type O work?"
"I'm Type B, but I'm anemic... I can't, right?"
When Ji Sui saw Shi Sheng return, he suddenly strode over and grabbed his hand.
"Xiao Yi is Type B!" Ji Sui looked anxious, his voice loud enough for everyone around them to hear. "Xiao Yi, this was your responsibility to begin with. Donating some blood is nothing. Saving someone is what matters!"
The others immediately crowded around as well.
Shi Sheng looked coldly at Ji Sui.
Everyone in the Shi family knew that Shi Yi had Type B blood.
The injured person needed Type B blood. Shi Sheng, who had Type AB blood, could not donate to him.
But the military academy conducted physical examinations every year, and everyone's data was on record. If Shi Sheng revealed his blood type now, his identity would undoubtedly be exposed.
Ji Sui had done it on purpose.
Besides, why had he happened to be here? Something was suspicious about this whole incident.
Shi Sheng slowly pulled his hand free from Ji Sui's grip.
Ji Sui looked extremely anxious. "Xiao Yi, don't be afraid. You're saving someone..."
Hearing the commotion, the doctor came over as well. "You're Type B? Can you come for testing now? Time is of the essence."
Before Shi Sheng could answer, the cadets around him began urging him repeatedly.
"Hurry up! What are you standing there for?"
"It's just a little blood. There's a life hanging in the balance inside!"
"How did I never realize he was this selfish before..."
"Why are you making such a racket in a hospital? He won't donate."
A rather impolite voice interrupted everyone.
Shi Sheng turned around and was surprised to see Yumian walking in, dragging Lindsay along with him.
Yumian sauntered to Shi Sheng's side, shoved aside several tall military academy Alphas in front of him, and pulled Shi Sheng to his side.
"Are you stupid? Letting them morally blackmail you like this?"
Before Shi Sheng could ask why they were here, the people around them began condemning Yumian along with him.
"What do you mean, morally blackmailing him? This was his responsibility to begin with!"
"Exactly! Just because he married into the Carlos family doesn't mean he can stop being reasonable!"
Yumian crossed his arms and listened to them argue. "It's not as if the medical center has no blood. Is it really necessary to make someone who just recovered from an injury donate blood?"
His gaze swept across the military academy cadets before him. The young master lightly tossed out two words. "You're sick."
Lindsay had already approached the doctor and displayed his work identification. "Hello, I'm Lindsay from the Biological Research Institute. I discussed the situation with the institute on the way here and transferred over authorization to use a blood supply."
The doctor let out a breath of relief. "That's wonderful. Thank you for coming all this way."
Lindsay turned back and nodded at Shi Sheng before following the doctor away.
Seeing Shi Sheng's confused expression, Yumian pulled him away from the crowd and whispered, "I told Big Brother what happened. He's in a meeting with the Cabinet, so he told me to bring Brother Lindsay over first. He'll be here soon."
Before Shi Sheng could say anything, Yumian suddenly smacked him hard on the forehead.
"Don't tell people you belong to the Carlos family when you go out."
Shi Sheng rubbed his slightly sore forehead and picked up his voice device. "Elaine is coming?"
"Mm-hm." Yumian crossed his arms. "I really don't know what kind of black magic you used to make Big Brother care so much about you. He's even coming personally for something like this."
Shi Sheng's chaotic heart gradually calmed. He turned to look at Ji Sui, who was speaking with the other cadets, and said to Yumian, "I need to go take care of something."
Yumian asked, "Want me to come with you?"
Shi Sheng hurriedly shook his head.
Yumian snorted. "Whispering secrets to the Shi family again."
Shi Sheng quickly sent him a pleading kitten sticker.
Ji Sui was wearing a gentle smile as he reassured everyone that the injured cadet would certainly be fine when someone suddenly yanked him forcefully to one side.
He was startled at first, but once he saw that it was Shi Sheng, he quickly returned to normal.
"Xiao Yi, why didn't you go see the Security Department?"
There was a meaningful smile on his face. "After all, this was quite a serious accident."
Everyone in the Shi family could understand sign language. Shi Sheng expressionlessly signed, "Why did you do this?"
"What?" Ji Sui paused, then smiled again. "I think all I did was run around helping you after the accident. I was even the one who called and brought Lin Chi here. You're my cousin, after all. It's what I should do."
Shi Sheng looked at him coldly and asked directly, "You know I'm not Type B."
Ji Sui put on an exaggerated expression of surprise. "Oh no, I forgot you're Shi Sheng."
Then he looked full of apology. "Sorry. Luckily you didn't donate blood, or that would have been terrible."
Shi Sheng watched him perform, then suddenly smiled slowly.
Ji Sui watched him warily. "What are you smiling about?"
"Ji Sui, you're really boring." Shi Sheng signed slowly. "And very stupid."
"If my identity is exposed, you, as a member of the Shi family, won't escape either."
Ji Sui stared at him for a moment before sneering. "Even if I hurt myself by eight hundred, as long as I can hurt you, it's worth it."
"Shi Sheng, you probably don't know this, but Lowell's father has already agreed to help me secure a job in the Cabinet. Once I graduate in two years, I'll be able to enter the Cabinet."
"Also, Uncle said a few days ago that after some time, he'll transfer part of the assets into my name."
"Can't be helped. You got married off, and Shi Yi is hiding somewhere and refusing to come back."
"Besides, I don't even have the Shi surname. If the Shi family is handed over for me to inherit, then even if your substitute marriage is exposed, most people can still be protected."
"It was Uncle's idea."
"As for you, you'd better fend for yourself."
Shi Sheng listened to Ji Sui's smug boasting and calmly picked up his voice device, pressing it a few times.
Then Ji Sui heard a sweet little girl's voice say to him brightly—
"Idiot."
Ji Sui's expression darkened. "Who are you calling an idiot?"
Shi Sheng switched the voice back. "Ji Sui, do you think everything will be fine as long as my brother doesn't come back?"
Ji Sui said, "What do you mean?"
Shi Sheng smiled. He waved his wristband at Ji Sui, wearing an obedient little smile.
Ji Sui looked at Shi Sheng's wristband in confusion. Before he could react, Shi Sheng had already moved around him to leave.
Then something suddenly occurred to him. He whipped around in shock.
"You know... you know where Shi Yi is?!"
Shi Sheng smiled at him.
Ji Sui said unwillingly, "So what if he comes back? He'll just be another person held accountable by the Carlos family and His Majesty!"
"Shi Sheng, neither you nor Shi Yi will have an easy time!"
Shi Sheng could not be bothered to pay Ji Sui any attention.
Thinking about the accident, it seemed he would have to make a trip to the Capital Police Bureau.
Lost in thought, Shi Sheng lowered his head as he rounded a corner and crashed straight into a cold, hard chest.
Shi Sheng froze and abruptly looked up.
The Alpha, still dressed in military uniform, reached out a hand to steady him and lowered his eyes to meet Shi Sheng's gaze.
Shi Sheng's face instantly went pale.
How much of what Ji Sui had just said... had Elaine heard?
