At last, Buzz Cut's ears twitched. Hearing a set of light footsteps, his demeanor instantly changed. His maggot-like body straightened, and he held up a classified Spirit Hall booklet in both hands, flipping through it as an air of melancholy scholarship radiated from him.
In the corner, A Jie withdrew his greedy gaze, quietly returned the book in his hand to the shelf, and left.
After a while, the Saintess appeared in the aisle on the other side. At the end of the corridor, she saw that damn Buzz Cut, wholly absorbed in the sea of books.
So she carefully approached and seized the chance to cover Buzz Cut's eyes with both hands. "Guess who I am."
"Dong'er, stop fooling around. I know it's you." Buzz Cut sighed.
Bibi Dong stuck out her tongue and sat beside Yu Xiaogang, her wine-red eyes watching Buzz Cut turn the pages.
As Yu Xiaogang flipped through the classified Spirit Hall booklet, he casually asked, "Dong'er, your teacher must know why Qian Xunyi was able to absorb a Soul Ring beyond his limit and evolve his martial soul, right?"
"I asked." Bibi Dong rolled her eyes. "Teacher doesn't know about any of that. He's nowhere near as capable as you."
Yu Xiaogang frowned, feeling somewhat angry, though it was inconvenient to show it. "Dong'er, your teacher is Qian Xunyi's older brother. As a member of the Angel Clan, how could he possibly not know such a secret—" Seizing the opening, Xiao Gang continued, "If you ask me, your teacher simply doesn't want you to know. He's keeping his guard up around you."
"You're saying Teacher is guarding against me? That can't be true. I'm his disciple, after all."
Yu Xiaogang said, "Dong'er, you may be his disciple, and you may be close to him, but you're destined not to be a member of the Angel Clan. The feelings between you and your teacher are all fake. The only reason you were able to become the Saintess, and the only reason the Pope took you as his disciple, was because he valued your talent—not you as a person. Perhaps, in his eyes, you're nothing more than a tool."
Bibi Dong sank into thought.
"But I'm different. We're friends, after all. I couldn't bear to watch you be used by Spirit Hall without even realizing it, so I had to remind you," Yu Xiaogang said softly.
Although Gangzi had been collecting Spirit Hall's monthly stipend during this time, getting close to the Saintess, using her to obtain Spirit Hall knowledge, and even planning to use Spirit Hall's resources in the future to prepare for publishing his own books, he still possessed the awareness expected of a member of the Upper Three Sects. Seeing such an extraordinarily gifted Saintess, and given the opportunity, he did not mind driving a wedge between Bibi Dong and the Pope to weaken Spirit Hall's strength. Of course, it would be even better if he could lure this genius with Twin Martial Souls and innate full soul power into his own clan, making Spirit Hall's talent serve him. Then he would become a meritorious figure for his sect.
"Teacher, how could he... Teacher isn't like that!"
"Whether he is or not, Dong'er, won't you know if you ask him a few more times? If your teacher is willing to tell you about absorbing Soul Rings beyond one's limit and the reason behind Qian Xunyi's martial soul evolution, that would prove he has genuine feelings for you, rather than merely using you," Yu Xiaogang said.
Bibi Dong nodded.
The Hall of Douluo was a cemetery. Every tombstone here belonged to a deceased Title Douluo.
At the center of the Hall of Douluo stood a lifelike statue of the Angel God, and beneath it were several enormous stone tablets.
Names and titles had all been inscribed upon these stone tablets.
Qian Daoliu stood beneath the Angel God's statue, facing it, while the six consecrators stood on either side of him.
Qian Xunyi stood below.
This was an investiture ceremony belonging solely to Qian Xunyi. Aside from the Consecration Hall, no one else was present. This was an internal investiture ceremony of Spirit Hall.
It meant that Qian Xunyi's existence would remain unknown to outsiders, existing as part of Spirit Hall's hidden foundation.
"Across the entire Douluo Continent, any who achieve the rank of Title Douluo come to Spirit Hall to receive their title, carving their names and titles upon these tablets. After death, they are buried within the Hall of Douluo." Recalling the glory of the past, Qian Daoliu sighed. "This is the honor our ancestor, the Angel God, left to Spirit Hall. Though Spirit Hall's prestige has declined over the years, all factions across the continent still abide by this rule."
"Our Angel Clan has taken protecting the Douluo Continent as its mission. That is why we earned the title of the holy land of soul masters."
Having said that, Qian Daoliu turned to Qian Xunyi. "Xunyi, although your martial soul has mutated, it is still a variant of the Angel Martial Soul. Martial souls originate from divine gifts and possess unimaginable power, but they also represent responsibility."
"The greater the ability, the greater the responsibility. Possessing an Angel Martial Soul, you must also bear the mission passed down through generations of the Angel Clan: suppress evil soul masters and wicked forces, and protect our world."
"Father, don't worry. I will definitely protect my world." My world naturally has to be protected by me, Qian Xunyi thought to himself.
"Uh..." Qian Daoliu froze slightly. Had he misheard just now? His world?!
Qian Xunyi lived in this world too, so there did not seem to be anything wrong with saying that.
Qian Daoliu and the consecrators stepped aside, revealing the stone tablets behind them to Qian Xunyi.
Qian Xunyi looked at the inscriptions and saw several titles he recognized.
Clear Sky Douluo Tang Chen
Thunder Douluo Yu Minggu
Seven-Kill Douluo Chen Jianjun
Every name on every inscription represented a Title Douluo.
On the enormous central tablet were the names of the Angel Clan.
Angel God Qian Yuhan
Angel Douluo Qian Lingyue
Angel Douluo Qian Zhonghuang
Angel Douluo Qian Jingfeng
Angel Douluo Qian Daoliu
Angel Douluo Qian Xunji
Every one of them was an Angel Douluo, and every name represented a generation.
Each generation had only one Six-Winged Angel Martial Soul, and only one Douluo with the Angel title.
Qian Xunyi's appearance had broken this convention. Under some author's mysterious arrangement, Qian Daoliu had one day failed to confess to Bo Saixi, become disheartened, gotten drunk amid worldly pleasures, and had a one-night stand with some woman, resulting in Qian Xunyi's birth.
Under normal circumstances, each generation of the Angel Clan had only one Six-Winged Angel, while all other martial souls would degenerate into Two-Winged Holy Angels.
But Qian Xunyi was different. When he awakened his martial soul at the age of six, he directly awakened the Six-Winged Angel, becoming the second person of this generation after Qian Xunji to possess the Six-Winged Angel Martial Soul.
The same generation, the same father, different mothers, the same Six-Winged Angel Martial Soul, yet more outstanding than him—this was why Qian Xunji had always been hostile toward Qian Xunyi.
"Now, you may carve your name and title upon this tablet," Qian Daoliu said.
Qian Xunyi walked to the tablet. Now, he too was a Title Douluo, and he had long since decided on his title.
Looking at the rows of Angel Douluo inscriptions, Qian Xunyi carved his title and name on the same line as Qian Xunji's name:
World-Pacifying Douluo Qian Xunyi.
