Kaihime was raised as a boy from childhood and developed exceptional martial and tactical ability. Though celebrated as the foremost beauty of Fusang's Eastern Provinces, she wanted recognition for her skill rather than her appearance. 16

She gathered and trained girls in martial arts, hoping they could win merit on the battlefield and improve women's standing in Fusang. Her hopes collapsed when her warriors were sent away to become hime warriors—fighters expected to serve their masters sexually as well as fight. When even her father would not intervene, Kaihime took her remaining twenty-odd warriors to Edo's Chinese Quarter to seek employment with Great Xia. 16

At the recruitment site, she defended her group from hostile Fusang warriors and fought Lin Yongqian to a standstill over nearly a hundred exchanges. Qin Mo accepted her and her subordinates into his service, assigning them to protect and care for wounded soldiers with pay equal to male warriors. 16 17

In Great Xia, Kaihime entered the wounded soldiers' camp under Old Li and Xu Liyan. Her duel with Xu exposed the gulf between ordinary martial skill and cultivation, strengthening her determination to learn. Xu later adopted her as his daughter and became her cultivation mentor. 24 31

Her ambition is paired with loyalty to the women under her command. She seeks wages and a future for them, gives her own meat soup to younger warriors during their difficult adjustment to Great Xia food, and pursues cultivation so that her future is no longer dependent on her father or social status. 17 23 31

She is highly respectful toward genuine skill. After Xu Liyan defeats her, she immediately sets aside her frustration, bows deeply, and asks for further instruction. 24
