Background / History

Eight years before her meeting with Luo Wen, Nami’s adoptive mother Bellemere was murdered by Arlong. Nami then endured eight years of exploitation by the Arlong Pirates, drawing nautical charts for them while gathering 100 million Beli to buy back Cocoyasi Village. Arlong and the corrupt Marine Captain Nezumi ultimately stole the money and refused to free the village. 6

Desperate to save the villagers and Nojiko, Nami encountered Luo Wen on Cocoyasi’s beach and begged him to eliminate Arlong, offering everything she had—including her life—in return. Though she feared Arlong’s strength and initially expected Luo Wen to flee if the battle became impossible, she guided him to Arlong Park. 6 7

After Luo Wen destroyed the Arlong Pirates, Nami accepted his invitation to become the Windrider’s navigator. This gave her a way to repay him, travel safely, and pursue her dream of drawing charts of the entire world. 10

Personality

Nami is fiercely devoted to Cocoyasi Village, Nojiko, and the people she considers companions. Her childhood under Arlong left her deeply distrustful of pirates and highly sensitive to threats against ordinary civilians. When she learns Golden Lion may target Cocoyasi, she is enraged by his willingness to harm civilians and immediately focuses on protecting her home. 10 110 113

She is practical and strongly motivated by Beli, quickly calculating bounties and treating pirate captures as valuable income. Even so, her interest in money is tied to her earlier hardship and her desire to contribute to Luo Wen’s ambitions. 16 21 63
