The night passed without incident.
Early morning.
Several dozen figures had gathered before the mountain gate, all looking tense as they whispered among themselves without stop. Some even paced back and forth with grim faces.
At the front of the chaotic crowd, the two outer sect elders appeared expressionless, but their gazes were exceedingly complicated, as though they had no mind left to lecture the disciples.
Clearly, none of them were particularly willing to be sent on such a mission. Crimson Firmament Heavenly Sect had recently gained a fearsome reputation, its methods brutally ruthless. Whether they would return alive from this journey was uncertain.
What was more, in the face of such a perilous mission, they were being led by a new elder. That gave them even more cause for complaint.
Just then, Yi Feng strode over with light, brisk steps.
"Greetings, Elder Yi."
At the sight of him, everyone offered a symbolic salute, though their spirits were clearly lacking.
Yi Feng had originally worn an excited expression, but when he saw this listless scene, he was momentarily taken aback. Out of courtesy, he smiled and cupped his hands first.
"Greetings to the two elders. There is no need for everyone to stand on ceremony."
Everyone nodded politely, then continued standing in silence.
Twice in a row, the entire group remained utterly dispirited.
Looking at them, they showed not the slightest awareness that they bore an important duty. They might as well have written the four words "utterly unwilling" across their faces.
Still, with the intention of boosting morale, Yi Feng offered a few encouraging words.
