At this point, the adventurer army had suffered over a hundred casualties, with dozens more scattering in all directions. Only around 150 of their core forces remained, and under the protection of the Flame Protection Barrier, they finally completed their last formation adjustment.
When the Black Dragon dove once more, the enemy successfully launched an effective counterattack.
Gravity Spell!
Aging Spell!
Fatigue Ray!
Disintegration Spell!
Several curse spells struck the Black Dragon in succession. Most were directly resisted by his powerful vitality, but one Gravity Spell successfully slowed him for a moment.
Yet that brief pause was enough to bring deadly consequences. The Disintegration Spell weakened his scales, and a dense rain of arrows landed on him, dealing countless two-digit hits: -17, -33, -25...
Two volleys of arrows only took three thousand of his health.
Is that all? Just as he was about to climb higher, a cold flash streaked past. Before Mephisto could react, a sharp pain erupted from his left chest. -572!
A bright crimson number stood out conspicuously amid the sea of two-digit damage.
Roar, that hurt! Mephisto spiraled upward, gained altitude, bit down on the arrow shaft, and pulled it out through the pain. One glance told him why it had dealt so much damage—a mithril arrowhead enchanted with Greater Armor-Piercing Spell. Damn, rich people.
If that had hit a vital spot, he might actually have been brought down. With damage that high, could that have been a hero player?
He looked down into the crowd and spotted an Elven ranger in a hooded cloak, slowly drawing another arrow.
Not a hero, just an adventurer!? He was somewhat surprised. An adventurer capable of dealing that much damage was truly unexpected. If the power had been a little greater, it might even have triggered a Critical Strike.
Although monsters in Skyworld had health bars as a concession to game mechanics, the game also included the setting of a Critical Strike in pursuit of realism. Once a Critical Strike occurred, the health bar became meaningless. No matter how much health you had, you would be killed in a single blow.
However, triggering a Critical Strike was not easy. It was manageable against humanoids—severing the head or piercing the heart would do it—but against enormous creatures like Black Dragons, it was far more difficult.
At Mephisto's current size, beheading him would require a blade at least ten meters long. As for the dragon heart, it was hidden beneath thick scales. Contrary to what most people believed, it was not in the chest, but beneath the neck, where the dragon scales were also the hardest. Furthermore, a dragon heart did not grow proportionally with the dragon's size. Though Mephisto's wingspan exceeded a hundred meters, his heart was not much larger than a normal human's.
Landing a one-hit kill was extremely difficult.
Even so, he was not about to take the risk.
Murphys (Black Dragon Lord): "Foolish mortals, do you think that hiding beneath magical protection and arming yourselves with sturdy weapons and sharp blades will allow you to stand against the great Black Dragon Lord Mephisto? Witness the might of the Black Dragon Legion! Appear, my servants! Tear my enemies apart with your claws, fangs, and blades!"
The next second, the surrounding ground collapsed one after another, revealing more than a dozen pitch-black tunnels. Groups of Goblins, Kobolds, Gnolls, and even several three-meter-tall Ogres charged at the adventurers under the urging of several Dragonkin vanguards.
This completely caught the players off guard. Their formation had been prepared for aerial defense, with sharpshooters, hunters, and other ranged classes stationed around the outer edge. Now they were directly exposed to swarms of monsters.
Qingfeng Lanhuai: "Fuck, melee team, get up there! Clear the mobs!"
Several thieves and assassins appeared from the surrounding area.
Menle Nage Aima: "Get up there my ass. The melee fighters all died earlier."
Zhu Youlei: "Only a few of us are left."
Only then did Qingfeng Lanhuai realize that, in their focus on air defense, the melee classes had effectively been abandoned. The warriors in particular had suffered horrific losses, with barely any left. A few thieves, assassins, and shadow dancers capable of stealth had survived by hiding in the shadows, but those classes were not good at holding the line. Expecting them to support an entire battle line was wishful thinking.
A few Paladins had also survived by relying on Holy Shield, but it was nowhere near enough.
In the blink of an eye, the monsters charged into the adventurers' formation and began a wild slaughter. Several spellcasters near the edge were killed on the spot.
The thieves and assassins were instantly swallowed by the horde. Qingfeng Lanhuai put away his longbow and drew two curved blades, cutting down several Goblins with two swift slashes. "Damn it! Anyone who can summon, summon your pets! Casters, clear the mobs first!"
As he spoke, he whistled and summoned his wolf.
It had to be said that the players of Dragon's Sorrow had some skill. Their reactions were extremely quick. Several elementalists summoned rock golems and arranged them into a loose line, while hunters' and rangers' beast pets, Necromancers' skeletal guards, demon warlocks' Felhounds, arcanists' phantom hounds...
Several druids joined forces to summon a massive vine monster. The countless vines it released entangled a huge group of Gnolls, leaving them unable to move and forcibly stalling the monster army's assault.
Once the formation stabilized, the spellcasting classes' powerful damage output was fully unleashed. Firestorm and Chain Lightning swept through the Goblin ranks, knocking them down in waves. Alchemical bombs inflicted heavy casualties among the Kobolds, sending them fleeing in all directions.
Several Ogres did manage to inflict some effective damage, smashing down unfortunate adventurers around the perimeter and opening two gaps in the crowd. But they were immediately focused down by the hunters' and rangers' bows and crossbows. Those weapons were not very effective against dragons, but against these unarmored hulks, they were as easy as target practice.
Watching his monster servants being slaughtered below, Mephisto could only shake his head.
What a bunch of trash. These monster lackeys the system gave away for free really were useless. They still couldn't take down an enemy with such a disorganized formation.
What a pity there were too few Dragonkin under my command. If I had a hundred Dragonkin vanguards, fifty Dragonkin mages, and a few Dragonman Warlords providing auras and directing the battle, I could have easily punched through their formation.
But building a Dragonkin Hatchery cost no less than five hundred thousand RMB. He had grown used to living frugally and could not bear to spend money so extravagantly. Now that he was on the battlefield, he could only make do with this trash.
Fortunately, they cost nothing, so he did not feel bad if they died. As long as his notoriety was high enough, he could pull together another huge mob anytime. Besides, their purpose of disrupting the enemy formation had been achieved.
By now, in order to deal with the monster army's ambush, the adventurers' formation had long since fallen apart. Even several sections of the Flame Protection Barrier had vanished.
The Black Dragon found a suitable angle and dove down once again.
Deep breath—charging, charging again, triple charge—Dragonfire Wildfire!
Mo Fei enjoyed this breath of dragonfire to the fullest, spraying from one end of the battlefield all the way to the other. Wherever the flames passed, adventurers and monsters alike were burned to ashes—this game had no such thing as reduced friendly-fire damage.
That single breath killed at least fifty or sixty adventurers, while also wiping out over a hundred Goblins, Gnolls, and Ogres.
The air above the battlefield was filled with the charred stench of burning flesh and blood.
