Under the gazes of Mary, Aidale, and Earl Shilin, James VIII entered the meeting hall with an attendant supporting him.
A rare flush colored James VIII's pale face. Although he needed help walking, he seemed to be in good spirits.
"Father."
"Your Majesty."
Mary and the other two rose to their feet.
The old earl stood at once and offered his chair to his friend. Only after his friend had sat down did he ask, "Is this because of what just happened?"
As he spoke, the old earl cast a displeased glance at the attendant beside them.
He knew his old friend's condition all too well.
For that reason, he had repeatedly forbidden the palace attendants from telling James about what was happening in Lerdri. Even if they told him anything, they were to share only good news.
"Don't blame him."
"I forced him to tell me."
James VIII spoke slowly.
Then the king looked at Mary with affection.
"Trust your own decisions."
"But take responsibility for them as well. Do you understand?"
That was what James VIII told her.
The king had to pause several times to finish those few short words.
"I understand."
Mary nodded earnestly.
She was not merely humoring him. She truly understood.
In fact, the young princess had long since prepared herself for the worst.
Seeing Mary nod, James VIII smiled. Then he turned to Earl Shilin.
"Earl, I have some matters to discuss privately with Mary and Aidale."
"Of course, Your Majesty."
The young earl bowed, then turned and left the meeting hall.
The attendant hurriedly bowed and prepared to leave as well, but James VIII stopped him.
The old earl gave the attendant a surprised look.
As far as he could remember, no one other than Turner had ever enjoyed such trust.
