At the three urgent blasts of the horn, the sprawling, unwieldy convoy immediately fell into turmoil. The commoners and wealthy merchants in its midst looked behind them in terror.

The only saving grace was that the knights galloping along either side of the convoy quickly brought the panic under control.

The men picked up weapons, forming the last line of defense.
