Police?!
Everyone froze when they heard Teddy's words.
The young man whose girlfriend had died looked especially incredulous.
"What proof do you have?"
He asked, his eyes wide.
"My name is Teddy. I'm a police sergeant."
"My badge number is C:1204666."
"You can verify it with a phone call."
Teddy spoke without hesitation.
However, he temporarily concealed the fact that he had been suspended. Bringing that up now would be neither sensible nor appropriate. Teddy was happy to follow the rules, but he wasn't a stickler.
So he didn't follow his usual procedure.
Or, more precisely, everything before him was far too simple.
Teddy had spotted something wrong at first glance.
After sweeping his gaze over the scene once more, Teddy looked at the people standing in the rain.
Or, to be precise, at the dead girl's boyfriend.
"Why did you kill her?"
Teddy asked.
As soon as he said that, silence fell around them. Nothing could be heard except the patter of rain.
Everyone stood there in a daze, their eyes shifting between Teddy and the young man whose face still bore traces of grief and anger.
They had no idea what was happening.
"What kind of joke is this?"
The young man shouted.
"A joke?"
"Let me ask you all: where were you before this?"
"And how did you end up chasing him outside?"
Teddy gave a cold laugh and turned his gaze toward the others.
"My family and I were eating in the dining room on the ground floor, along with these people. Then we heard him shouting his girlfriend's name and running hard. I was worried, so I followed him outside. They followed me."
The man from the family of three answered on everyone's behalf.
The others all nodded.
"Did you see this young woman?"
