Chapter 401: Mutual repulsion

The coffin lid flew off from within with a whistling rush.
The stench of decay spread through the air. Ratt and the others covered their noses and backed away, staring in horror at the mangled "corpse" rising from the coffin.
Nearly half of its body was missing.
Its left arm and half its ribs were gone, and only half its head remained.
The flesh clung to its ruined body as though glued in place.
Ratt's bodyguards swallowed instinctively, their hands beginning to tremble around their flintlock rifles.
The bizarre scene before them had already exceeded anything they could imagine.
Standing among them, Ratt had turned even paler.
This wealthy merchant of Boer City, a former noble, had never imagined he would encounter anything like this.
Even his encounter with a "monster" at home had been nowhere near as terrifying as witnessing a "corpse return to life."
Of course, Ratt and his men were far from the only ones horrified.
The bounty hunters and mercenaries who had followed them and concealed themselves in the darkness also held their breath.
They might have been far more experienced than Ratt and his men, but they had never experienced anything like this either.
Some of the more cautious bounty hunters and mercenaries began to retreat.
The sight before them made it clear that what was happening now was beyond anything they could get involved in.

He plunged into the darkness.
