Ch. 81Garp: I'm Fighting Vikengam?
Chapter Summary
- Vikengam overwhelms Gairam: Vikengam enters the battle and kills Gairam almost instantly by blowing his head apart. Doringer and Nightin are both shocked by his brutality and strength. Doringer realizes that Vikengam is approaching the level of Roger Pirates executives such as Rayleigh and Gaban, while Nightin is alarmed by the appearance of such a powerful and unfamiliar figure among Roger’s forces.
- Vikengam pursues the Poneglyph: After defeating Gairam, Vikengam avoids further combat and heads directly toward the World Pirates’ ship near Lindelande Island. His objective remains obtaining the Poneglyph, not winning the wider battle. Using his Frost-Heaven Mirror Image technique, he reaches the frozen ship and boards it while the World Pirates’ main forces are occupied elsewhere.
- The clash of top-tier pirates: As Vikengam reaches the ship, a massive burst of Conqueror’s Haki knocks back fighters throughout the battlefield. The shockwave comes from Roger, Whitebeard, Shiki, and Byrnndi World, who are now engaged in a chaotic four-way melee rather than separate duels. Vikengam recognizes the immense gap between his own strength and theirs, reminding himself not to become arrogant, then enters the ship to search for the Poneglyph.
- The Marines infiltrate the battlefield: Beneath the frozen sea, a Marine submarine carrying Garp, Sengoku, and Zephyr approaches the battlefield. Using Observation Haki, the three assess the situation. They decide to wait and conserve their strength while the pirates weaken one another, rather than immediately breaking through the ice and joining the conflict.
- New orders regarding Vikengam: Sengoku explains that Saint Saturn has changed the Marines’ orders. Since the Roger Pirates entered the New World, the Marines no longer need to fear direct consequences from targeting Saint Vikengam; in fact, they are encouraged to attack him. Garp is torn between pursuing Roger, his usual rival, and beating Vikengam, who angered him during the Alabasta incident. Sengoku and Zephyr manipulate Garp into choosing Vikengam by reminding him that opportunities to attack a Celestial Dragon are rare, while secretly avoiding the risk themselves.
- World remains the Marines’ primary target: Although Garp decides to attack Vikengam first and deal with Roger afterward, Zephyr reminds him that their official priority is Byrnndi World. World’s repeated threats to destroy Mary Geoise, the Red Line, and Marine Headquarters are backed by genuine efforts, making him a greater strategic threat than Roger, Whitebeard, or Shiki. The Marines therefore intend to eliminate World as soon as possible amid the chaos.
Character Developments and Interactions
- Vikengam demonstrates overwhelming combat ability, ruthless efficiency, and strategic focus by immediately abandoning the fight after defeating Gairam to pursue the Poneglyph.
- Doringer and Nightin are shaken by Vikengam’s power, changing their perception of the battlefield and the Roger Pirates.
- Garp remains impulsive and eager for personal fights, but is easily persuaded when Sengoku and Zephyr appeal to his desire to punish Vikengam.
- Sengoku and Zephyr act as cautious strategists, using Garp’s temperament for their own purposes while emphasizing the Marines’ broader mission.
- Roger, Whitebeard, Shiki, and World are portrayed as near-peer monsters whose battle produces overwhelming Haki and dwarfs the strength of ordinary fighters.
- Byrnndi World is distinguished as the Marines’ most dangerous enemy because his ambitions are not empty boasts but an active campaign against the World Government and Marine Headquarters.
Major Themes
- The vast hierarchy of power between ordinary pirates, elite officers, and legendary figures.
- The contrast between personal rivalry and strategic objectives: Garp wants revenge and excitement, while the Marines must prioritize World.
- Political hypocrisy within the World Government, which permits attacks on a Celestial Dragon when convenient but leaves the actual risk to Garp.
- The importance of the Poneglyph as the central prize behind the battle.
- The danger of underestimating Vikengam, whose noble status conceals formidable strength and ruthless determination.
