Going back was the safest choice, but bypassing the battle zone ahead would inevitably waste a great deal of time, slowing their team's exploration progress. If they waited and watched, perhaps they could wait for the battle ahead to end, then confirm what the other teams looked like and use that knowledge to pass through this troublesome area. But if the magical girls fighting ahead noticed them first, they might mistake them for enemies and drag them into the fight. It simply was not worth the risk.
