Ch. 501Why Had Everyone Stopped Smiling?
Key plot points and events
- After returning to safety, the disciples celebrate their first successful fights against Zombies. Shen Mo praises them and treats those infected with Abyss energy, encouraging them to keep fighting.
- Shen Mo then pushes them through repeated battles: he draws Zombies toward them, leaves them to fight, and returns to finish what remains. He cures their infections each time, but the disciples grow increasingly exhausted and demoralized.
- Although the disciples don’t realize it, the repeated cycle of exertion and treatment helps restore their spiritual energy and gradually widen their meridians.
- When the first group is spent, Shen Mo proposes rotating in newly arrived disciples. The exhausted veterans agree—and quietly let the newcomers discover the same ordeal for themselves.
- The pattern repeats with later groups. Each generation becomes resentful, then hopes another group will take over. A fourth rotation never happens: Shen Mo has nearly cleared the area and prepares to leave, believing he has done enough and can now claim his reward.
Character developments
- Shen Mo sees the disciples’ fearlessness as a way to build their strength and future talent. He is encouraging when it helps motivate them, but becomes an unyielding taskmaster, amused by their growing misery.
- The disciples progress from excitement and confidence to numb exhaustion. Their physical abilities improve, but they fail to notice the gains because they are focused on surviving the training.
- The earlier groups become complicit in the cycle, allowing later arrivals to be tricked into taking their turn.
Significant themes
- Growth through hardship: Repeated danger and recovery strengthen the disciples, even when they cannot recognize the benefits.
- Mentorship and coercion: Shen Mo intends to help, but his demanding methods leave the disciples feeling bullied rather than grateful.
- Shared suffering: The disciples’ initial solidarity gives way to a “if we suffered, so should you” mentality.
- Appearance versus reality: What looks like cruel, pointless labor is also training—and what seems like kindness from Shen Mo is partly a means of keeping the disciples going.
Character interactions
- Shen Mo praises and heals infected disciples, earning their gratitude, then silently intimidates them whenever they appear ready to complain.
- The exhausted veterans and eager newcomers exchange places, with the veterans withholding the truth until the newcomers experience the same ordeal.
- The disciples’ resentment shifts from Shen Mo to their own sectmates as they realize they have been set up, while still hoping someone else will take their place.
