Background / History

Laya and her grandfather, Guger, found Lu Chengchuan unconscious in the desert and took him in. During the months that followed, she taught him the local language, helped repair his shelter, and explained what little she knew of the world beyond their isolated village. 257 301 316

Two years before Lu's arrival, Laya's Spirit Awakening had failed despite her apparent talent. Lu discovered that her unique internal channels were blocked, leaving the extraordinary energy generated by her heart unable to circulate. After killing a Giant Worm for its Crystal, he used the Crystal's energy to open the blockages and turn her into an Esper. Laya immediately sought his help with cultivation and began calling him “Teacher.” 260 262

Under Lu's instruction, Laya cultivated while he supplied her with Monster Crystals. She wanted to accompany him on hunts to repay his help, but he refused until she had sufficient strength, as she would otherwise require his protection. 263

After two years away hunting and cultivating, Laya returned with Lu to find their village destroyed and all 136 inhabitants murdered, including Guger. Overcome with grief, she asked Lu to avenge them. He allowed her to confront the Blood Swordmaster, one of the killers, and she repeatedly stabbed him before Lu delivered the final blow. 266 269 270

Laya continued travelling with Lu to Fortress City. While he was away, she was imprisoned for over a month after accidentally bumping into the noblewoman Axiya and refusing an unjust demand for compensation. Lu broke her out, then ensured that Axiya publicly kowtowed to Laya and served a year under ordinary prison conditions. 275 277 278

Appearance

Laya was originally described as having a wheatish complexion, uncommon among the heavily sun-tanned inhabitants of her desert village. After advancing to Master level, she appeared younger and her complexion became fairer. 257 297

  • Her appearance was markedly altered by her Master-level breakthrough, which made her look younger. 297
  • After decades of combat, her Thunderclap Horn blade bore minor nicks despite careful maintenance. 299

Personality

Laya is deeply loyal to Lu Chengchuan, whom she regards as both her teacher and her only remaining family after Guger and the villagers were killed. She repeatedly seeks to repay Lu's support, whether by asking to join his hunts, promising to help him even at the cost of her life, or taking responsibility for his city. 263 281 287

Her early insecurity—especially over receiving Crystals and being unable to aid Lu—gradually develops into resolve. She confronts Axiya directly after her wrongful imprisonment and chooses punishment rather than execution, showing that her desire for justice does not extend to needless killing. 263 278

Unlike Lu, Laya cares strongly about governance and Xingxing City's future. She handles political matters, pushes him to attend meetings, and worries about the city’s security whenever he leaves. 287 291 303
