What made it unusual was that it was not a civilization of individual transcendence, but a civilization of an entire people.
There had naturally been practitioners, but mortals could also acquire power directly through bodily modification, and all manner of powerful alchemical items had abounded.

Using mortals as materials or food had been expressly forbidden. Its living conditions, laws, and order had all been far beyond anything the present Wizard Civilization could achieve.
Only after unearthing the Alchemical Ruins had the Flameburner Norman Martin learned that mortals did not have to kneel and live as penned livestock to survive.
That realization had stirred his heart, allowing a spark of humanity's karmic fire to blaze forth in the desperate, dark Tribal Era.
