Background / History
Su Ying was an elite S.H.I.E.L.D. agent whose refusal to execute civilians during a Berlin counterterrorism operation marked her as an “uncontrollable factor.” After refusing an order that would have killed three children, she was disappeared and branded a defector by her superiors. 3
In Lin Xiao’s remembered former timeline, Su Ying eventually became the Continental Hotel’s manager and died protecting him amid Thanos’s snap. Her fate is one of the reasons Lin treats her survival as non-negotiable after his rebirth. 1 3
In 2011, Su Ying confronted Lin in a Hydra base ventilation duct while investigating the planted explosives. She accepted a temporary alliance after he proved able to disable the bomb, then escaped the burning base with Lin and Wolfgang. 1 2 The group subsequently infiltrated Hydra’s ranks; Su Ying was admitted as an external member and assigned to the Third Operations Squad. 4 11
Her S.H.I.E.L.D. identity remained a liability. To erase the “Shadow” defector trail and satisfy Hydra’s suspicion, she endured a deliberately staged ambush that included real rib fractures and a self-inflicted incision. The operation earned her Hydra’s Loyalty Medal, full clearance, and core-personnel status. 42 49 50
After Lin outlined the Continental Hotel as an alternative to both Hydra’s brutality and S.H.I.E.L.D.’s corruption, Su Ying committed herself to its cause on the condition that Lin share risks, information, and responsibility with her. She was formally appointed the organization’s Steward when the Continental Hotel publicly established its internal structure. 36 121
Appearance
Su Ying typically presents herself in practical tactical clothing, favoring a restrained, combat-ready appearance over decoration. Her bearing remains alert even at rest. 28 35
- Black hair, usually tied into a neat ponytail. 28 29
- Deep brown, amber-like eyes; described elsewhere as obsidian-dark under low light. 36 46
- Thin calluses and faint scars across her hands from prolonged weapons and combat training. 36
- Commonly wears black tactical gear with a pistol holster and concealed daggers. 29
Personality
Su Ying is controlled, observant, and difficult to intimidate. Her detailed recollection of enemy weapons, body position, and lethal strikes reflects instincts developed through elite S.H.I.E.L.D. training, though that same precision can endanger her cover among ordinary Hydra soldiers. 4
She has a strong moral boundary around civilian lives. Her original break with S.H.I.E.L.D. began with refusing to massacre suspected terrorists—including children—and she later refuses to abandon more than a thousand civilians during Sokovia’s collapse despite the operational risk. 3 165
While initially distrustful of Lin Xiao’s unexplained knowledge, Su Ying becomes one of his most steadfast partners. She accepts calculated risks when necessary, but insists that partnership requires shared responsibility rather than blind obedience. 35 36 105
As a commander, she demands competence and judgment. She drills her personnel against hostage situations, superhuman threats, and tactical errors, emphasizing that equipment is only a tool and that people themselves must become the weapon. 29 66
Abilities & Skills
Elite Combat Training
Su Ying is a former S.H.I.E.L.D. Level 8 agent proficient in hand-to-hand combat, firearms, blade work, infiltration, and close-quarters killing. 47
- Can assess threats almost instantly and react through conditioned combat reflexes. 20
- Defeated three combat-simulation robots in rapid succession through joint strikes, evasive movement, and dagger work. 46
- Fought Chitauri forces and an energy-enhanced elite soldier despite severe injuries. 93 94
- Destroyed an elite Chitauri soldier by overloading and sacrificing her Falcon Wing equipment for a final high-speed shoulder charge. 95
- Her performance is limited by accumulated wounds, exhaustion, and equipment damage; she continued operating through arm injuries, damaged armor, and critically low energy reserves. 93 94 169
Tactical Command
Su Ying serves as a field leader capable of rapidly reading terrain, assigning roles, and changing plans under pressure.
- Leads reconnaissance and infiltration teams in the Amazon, Sokovia, Marseille, and other hostile zones. 113 125 148
- Prioritizes intelligence collection over unnecessary engagements when facing unknown forces or overwhelming opposition. 113 125
- Directed the evacuation of over a thousand civilians during Sokovia’s aerial catastrophe while organizing safe houses, transport routes, barricades, and delaying actions against Ultron’s robots. 165
- Designed training for teams facing enhanced enemies, high-speed targets, and sudden superhuman threats. 115
Undercover Work and Deception
Su Ying can maintain a constructed identity under extended psychological pressure.
- Passed Raven’s two-week loyalty review by playing the role of a S.H.I.E.L.D. defector disillusioned with her former agency while withholding all Continental Hotel intelligence. 59
- Used a staged injury, forged medical narrative, and disciplined performance to transform Hydra’s suspicion into official recognition. 48 49 50
- Conducted undercover negotiations with Ivan Vanko’s men, remaining composed after her false evidence was exposed. 41
Mental Resilience
Su Ying has repeatedly resisted psychological coercion and extreme pain.
- Endured real rib fractures and unanesthetized stitching without breaking cover. 49
- Resisted the mental assault of chaos energy by biting her tongue and wounding her own thigh to remain lucid. 140
- Faced Raven’s prolonged interrogation scenarios without exposing the Continental Hotel. 59
Piloting and Improvisation
Su Ying can operate advanced vehicles and adapt their systems under combat conditions.
- Piloted the Shadow Shuttle through its first jump toward the Alpha Centauri sector and Knowhere. 220
- Escaped Knowhere in a modified reconnaissance craft by using industrial terrain, wreckage, coolant-pipeline explosions, and a jump corridor to evade Black Order pursuit. 222 223
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Tactical daggers and firearms — Her standard loadout includes a Glock pistol, concealed tactical daggers, and later customized firearms. 29 82
- Composite protective suit — Lightweight armor with ballistic and cut resistance, temperature regulation, vital-sign monitoring, encrypted communications, and medical injection interfaces. 59
- Falcon Wing tactical exoskeleton — Leg-focused powered armor with gyroscopic balance support, enhanced mobility, and force amplification. It enabled a recorded sprint speed of 12 m/s during testing; a damaged unit was deliberately destroyed during the Chitauri battle to save Lin Xiao. 82 95
- Vibranium short blade — A close-combat weapon carried during the Sokovia operation and later missions. 169 172
- Tesseract energy fragments — Temporarily used to enhance Falcon Wing during the fight against Chitauri remnants; their power caused severe strain and attracted hostile attention. 94 95
- Shadow Shuttle — A stealth hybrid craft combining Chitauri, Kree, and Stark-derived technology; Su Ying piloted it on her deep-space intelligence mission. 220
- Quantum Suit and Vibranium longsword — Later mission equipment used during the operation involving the River of Time. 262
Relationships
- Lin Xiao — Initially a wary temporary ally, later her closest operational partner and emotional anchor. Su Ying demands honesty and shared responsibility from him, repeatedly risks herself to protect him, and pledges to stand beside him through Project Insight and beyond. 2 36 95 105
- Brock Rumlow — Former S.H.I.E.L.D. superior and persistent antagonist. Rumlow considered Su Ying’s independence a threat, pursued her “defection” as a personal ideological grievance, and later subjected her to suspicion, tests, and direct violence. 51 54 59 140
- Natasha Romanoff — A cautious ally during the Sokovia investigation. The two exchange limited intelligence on Project Ascendant Blood and the Chaos Cult while maintaining clear boundaries. 128
- Black Bear — Trusted subordinate and field support. He frequently provides suppressive fire, reconnaissance, breaching support, and cover for Su Ying’s teams. 113 127 140
- Nightingale — Core intelligence and communications partner. Nightingale supplies satellite, thermal, and signals support for Su Ying’s field operations. 125 148 166
- Wolf — One of Su Ying’s earliest escape companions and a reliable Continental Hotel operative. 2 41
- Wanda Maximoff and Quicksilver — Temporary Sokovian allies. Su Ying coordinated with them during the Ultron crisis, assigning them civilian-rescue duties and relying on Wanda’s precision chaos magic during a breakout. 163 164 166
Story Role / Major Arcs
Chitauri Remnants and Tesseract Fragments
Su Ying fought beside Lin Xiao against Chitauri remnants and a wounded Leviathan. She used Falcon Wing to draw enemy fire, secured Tesseract energy fragments, and saved Lin when an elite soldier cornered him—at the cost of destroying her own exoskeleton. 93 94 95
Project Ascendant Blood and the Chaos Cult
As a Continental Hotel field commander, Su Ying led reconnaissance against Dr. List’s Project Ascendant Blood facilities, uncovering human experimentation, enhanced “Products,” and evidence of an unknown black-ops force. 113 115 She later recovered the project’s Seed in Sokovia, negotiated a limited information-sharing arrangement with Natasha Romanoff, and faced Brock Rumlow’s chaos ritual in a bunker. 127 128 140
Sokovia Evacuation
During Ultron’s attack on Sokovia, Su Ying chose to remain with civilians at Assembly Point Three rather than retreat with priority personnel. Her decision convinced Lin Xiao to commit hidden transport resources to the rescue effort. 164 165 Even after the evacuation, she continued searching for her missing squad near the Vibranium body facility and discovered that a third party had stolen most of the remaining Vibranium. 166 169
Cosmic Reconnaissance
Su Ying departed Earth aboard the Shadow Shuttle to gather intelligence on the Infinity Stones, the Collector, and the Guardians of the Galaxy. 220 On Knowhere, she downloaded most of the Collector’s database, extracted Reality Stone and Soul Stone leads through negotiation, and escaped the Black Order in a stolen reconnaissance craft. 222 223
