Zuo Yi took the Harley for a spin along the nearby river embankment.
This imported motorcycle was excellent. It had powerful acceleration, superb handling, and a deep, forceful roar from its engine and exhaust, fully proving that it was a well-muscled, power-packed ride.
With a few suitable modifications, it could unleash even greater power if needed.
As a knight, Zuo Yi had taken a liking to his new ride in no time and drove it straight into the courtyard when he got home.
After killing the engine, he got off the motorcycle and stood in the courtyard, thinking for a moment.
During the three years Zuo Yi had been missing, the Zuo Family Old Residence had remained safe and sound. Apart from Ding Xu's protection, it had probably been largely due to good luck. Otherwise, if wandering thieves had come by, the place would have long since been cleaned out.
Now that Zuo Yi was back, what had happened last night was undoubtedly a warning. Coupled with the impending demolition of Riverside Town, what if someone broke into his home while he was away?
That possibility was entirely real. Zuo Yi had not dismissed Ding Xu's warning as meaningless chatter.
After considering it, he took a statue from his Spatial Ring.
The statue was only a little over a foot tall and made of dark gray stone. With its savage, terrifying head, sharp horns and claws, tall pointed ears, heavily muscled body, and a pair of wings extending from its back, it resembled a winged demon from the Abyss World.
But it was a Gargoyle.
"Sistes."
Holding the Gargoyle in his left hand, Zuo Yi recited the activation spell in the Kungu Language.
The instant he uttered the final syllable, the Gargoyle's tightly shut eyes flew open, an eerie crimson light flickering within them. Then it tilted its head and shook its body.
Zuo Yi flung it upward. The newly activated Gargoyle soared into the sky, spreading its folded wings in an instant as its body suddenly expanded several times over.
Screech!
It let out a piercing cry and circled Zuo Yi once.
With a flick of his right hand, three Law Coins gleaming with enticing light shot into the air. The Gargoyle opened its mouth and swallowed them at lightning speed.
The next moment, a firm mental link formed between Zuo Yi and the Gargoyle. He issued it guardian commands: remain alert, drive away intruders, and attack.
After receiving its orders, the Gargoyle shot high into the sky. Beneath the full moon, it stretched its wings and hovered for a moment before diving down, vanishing into the dense camphor tree canopy in an instant.
But Zuo Yi knew clearly that from now on, it would guard that tree at all times, vigilantly defending against any intruder day and night!
Gargoyles were a wizard's finest scouts and sentries. They possessed extraordinary vision, capable of detecting unusual activity several kilometers away in the darkness. At close range, they could see through low- and mid-level invisibility and concealment spells, leaving enemies nowhere to hide.
Gargoyles were also formidable fighters. Their claws could easily tear apart wild beasts, and with their ability to fly, they could even stand against a fully armed formal knight.
With Gargoyles standing guard and defensive magic arrays in place, wizards could rest safely even in dangerous regions.
Zuo Yi's Gargoyle had been a gift from a great wizard. Its quality far surpassed that of an ordinary Gargoyle, and it was more than capable of protecting the Zuo Family Old Residence from ordinary people and even low-level extraordinary beings.
There had to be extraordinary powers in Blue Star World, Zuo Yi's current main world, so taking precautions was necessary.
But...
But the cost of keeping a Gargoyle was far higher than that of a Giant Spirit Witch Slave. One Law Coin could cover a Giant Spirit Witch Slave's daily consumption for three months, while the three Law Coins Zuo Yi had just fed it could support the Gargoyle's guard duty for at most one month.
And that was only in standby mode, meaning alert status. If it had to drive away or attack intruders, its consumption of law power would increase severalfold or even more than tenfold.
This was due to the difference in their ranks. Giant Spirit Witch Slaves were fine-grade law creations, while Gargoyles were exceptional-grade. Zuo Yi's was even a high-grade exceptional model—the difference between them was like that between a Mercedes Smart and a Mercedes S-Class.
Could their daily operating and maintenance costs possibly be the same?
Zuo Yi had only two or three hundred Law Coins stored in his Spatial Ring. He was not a wizard and lacked the ability to refine Law Coins, so every coin spent was one less coin he had.
Therefore, this was only a temporary emergency measure. He truly could not afford to keep it up long-term and would have to think of another solution.
Still, with the Gargoyle guarding the place, Zuo Yi could leave home without worry.
The next morning, he first went to the town police station to transfer ownership and register the Harley Ding Xu had given him.
After completing the necessary procedures, Zuo Yi put on a helmet and sunglasses he had dug out of his suitcase, then rode the motorcycle, now bearing its new license plate, toward the city.
Under blue skies and white clouds, he rode the stylish, powerful Harley down the broad, straight road. The wind blowing against his face carried the scent of fields and earth, making him feel refreshed and at ease.
It felt great.
As he crossed the bridge over the river, an arrogant engine roar suddenly came from behind him. A fiery red convertible sports car caught up and pulled alongside him.
Zuo Yi turned to look and found that the driver was a girl of seventeen or eighteen. Her hair was dyed purple, her eye shadow was heavy, and her blood-red lips contrasted with her fair, pretty face, giving her a strong non-mainstream vibe.
"Hey, uncle..."
The non-mainstream girl shouted, "Your Harley's pretty nice!"
Uncle?
Zuo Yi smiled faintly. Uncle it was, then. He was already a father, after all.
Seeing that Zuo Yi was unmoved, the girl curled her lips and shouted again, "Want to race me for a lap? Loser buys!"
Zuo Yi shook his head.
The speed limit on this road was eighty. Speeding would inevitably cost him Order Faith. Why would he race her when he had nothing better to do?
"Pfft!"
The girl showed utter disdain for Zuo Yi's refusal.
She raised her right thumb at him, then turned it downward and shook it—a gesture of contempt.
Without waiting for Zuo Yi to react, she slammed on the accelerator. The sports car roared as it shot forward, leaving Zuo Yi behind in the blink of an eye.
A faint voice drifted back on the wind. "Eat my dust!"
Zuo Yi could not help laughing.
He was not angry. She had merely reminded him of the youthful days he had once lived through, of the era when he had been a hot-blooded teenager.
The same youthful recklessness.
He continued down the road for several more minutes. Just as he was about to enter the bustling city district, Zuo Yi suddenly noticed what looked like a traffic accident ahead. A very familiar red sports car had crashed into the roadside guardrail, thick smoke rising from it.
The accident scene was a complete mess. Broken parts were scattered across the road, and several passersby were running over to watch. Some were calling the police, while others were filming.
Without hesitation, Zuo Yi pulled over. He parked the Harley by the roadside and got off to see what was going on.
The scene before him was grim enough. At least ten meters of guardrail had been smashed apart, and the expensive sports car was practically totaled. Its front end was mangled beyond recognition, and the rear-mounted engine compartment had also suffered severe damage.
Worse still, several metal guardrail pipes had pierced through the windshield and stabbed into the driver's seat from different angles. One pipe, four or five centimeters in diameter, had struck the non-mainstream girl squarely in the chest.
All of her earlier arrogance was gone. Her face was deathly pale, and she was already barely clinging to life. Bright red blood gushed continuously from the wound, pooling across the leather seat in a horrifyingly large puddle.
Although she was wearing a seat belt and the airbags had deployed, death's arrival could never be predicted.
Anyone could see that a young, vibrant life was about to fade away!
"That's horrible!"
"Quick, save her!"
"How are we supposed to save her like this? Someone already called the police."
"That sports car must be worth over a million, right?"
"She's dying, and you're still talking about the car?"
"What a pity..."
The surrounding passersby pointed and discussed the accident, but none of them dared step forward to treat her.
This was beyond their capabilities. All they could do was call the police and wait for professionals to arrive.
Zuo Yi strode over and grabbed the twisted, deformed car door.
Creak!
He forcibly tore the door off.
That was insane!
The passersby who witnessed the scene could hardly believe their eyes. Every one of them wore an Orz expression!
Th-This... this was not scientific!
A scene straight out of a movie or television drama had appeared right before their eyes, making them start to question life itself.
Here's the first update. I have to go out today, so all three chapters are being posted together!
