The Cause

Spring City Detention Center, visiting room.

The detention center's visiting hours were from nine in the morning to five in the afternoon. Under normal circumstances, the visiting room was not open at night, but special circumstances made exceptions.

By the time Zuo Yi and Fang Xiaohui arrived at the detention center, it was already past eleven at night. After waiting a few minutes in the visiting room, they finally saw Gao Feng.

Gao Feng was still wearing his usual clothes, a T-shirt and jeans, but he looked terrible. His hair was a mess like a bird's nest, his complexion was dreadful, his eyes were bloodshot, and his gaze was dull.

He looked as though he had suffered an enormous blow.

He hunched over as he approached, walking slowly as if enduring pain.

Yet there were no visible injuries on him.

When Gao Feng saw Zuo Yi sitting before the window through the thick glass, his eyes immediately widened.

His expression suddenly turned agitated.

He threw himself into the seat and eagerly grabbed the intercom handset. "Old Zuo, why are you here?"

"Zhao Lili called me."

Zuo Yi said gravely, "I heard something happened to you, so I came over."

Gao Feng could hardly believe it. "You came from Hang City?"

"Yes."

Zuo Yi gestured for him not to get worked up. "Tell me, what exactly happened?"

Gao Feng blinked, trying hard not to let his tears fall.

He suppressed the emotions in his heart and lowered his voice. "Old Zuo, go back. Don't worry about me."

Zuo Yi stared at him. "Since I came, I won't go back unless I get you out."

With Zuo Yi's strength, he could have rescued Gao Feng with a simple stretch of his hand. Forget the reinforced glass in front of them—even tank armor
