Chapter 159
As the car drove slowly onward, the scenery around them changed completely. The rolling green mountains vanished, replaced by a cloudless expanse. In the distance, snow-capped peaks of varying heights lined the horizon, with clouds resting atop their edges like hats.
The surroundings were quiet. He could hear the faint, almost imperceptible sound of gravel being crushed beneath the tires, soothing enough to put someone to sleep.
Li Wenchuan could not sleep. Curious, he watched the scenery outside the window, pressing his face near the glass with one hand against it so he would not lean too close.
The driver simply assumed he was from out of town and had never seen such scenery before. Every outsider who came here was like this, looking at every view with curiosity, even greed. To the locals, it was nothing more than sand, withered yellow grass, and distant snow mountains.
The corners of the snow mountains were ink-dark, strikingly like an Impressionist painting.
"It still looks pretty when you see it like this, right?" the driver said. The car turned onto a newly built, broad road and smoothed out, the jolting and the sound of sand being crushed disappearing.
From the sky, one would see a vast swath of yellowish grass across the ground, cut through by a white ribbon of road. A silver car traveled along it like a sliding drop of dew.
Li Wenchuan rolled down the window. The landscaping and road conditions here were much better, so there was no need to worry about dust and sand. "It's beautiful. It's my first time seeing it."
"You'll get used to it after looking at it long enough. You're so fair and clean-looking—you're from the south, right? You don't have scenery like this over there." The driver chatted on enthusiastically.
