Ch. 461Back to the Lobby Bar! The Fulcrum and Arishem!
Key plot points
- The Ancient One reveals that Tuwatu, the Dark Watcher, often visits the Lobby Bar. She opens a portal, and Chen Ji’s group enters the multiversal gathering place.
- Bartender Jack recognizes Chen Ji and shares news: Agamotto has been complaining that Chen Ji nearly trapped him in a painting, while the Ancient Gods of Tartarus and Utgard have allied and may seek revenge.
- Chen Ji asks about Tuwatu. Jack says Tuwatu regularly meets with other Watchers, but is surprised by Chen Ji’s claim that he has brought outsiders into the Multiverse and has links to the Council of Kangs.
- Jack summons Arishem, who says he has no intelligence on Tuwatu but will send Celestials to find him. Arishem also warns that the Living Abyss and the Old Ones are active threats.
- Chen Ji explains that Tuwatu may be changing the rules of Anchor Beings and could be trying to take the Fulcrum’s position. The Fulcrum asks Chen Ji to help Arishem confront the Old Ones after the Dark Watcher is dealt with.
Character developments and interactions
- Chen Ji learns that several powerful Ancient Gods may be hostile to him. His ambition to remake the Multiverse is reinforced by his disgust at gods who have become cruel and inhuman. He remains wary of the Fulcrum’s immense power and uneasy around Arishem, whose fellow Celestial Chen Ji once killed in a dream.
- The Fulcrum / Bartender Jack shifts from genial bartender to a serious guardian of the Multiverse, responding to Chen Ji’s accusations by summoning Arishem. He sees Chen Ji’s vision as distinct from the First Firmament’s and therefore tolerates his growing Multiverse.
- Arishem is initially ready to attack Chen Ji’s group, but stops when the Fulcrum identifies them as guests. He accepts the warning about Tuwatu and reveals the larger war against the Old Ones.
- Deadpool provides comic relief, eagerly befriending Jack and gawking at Arishem’s unexpectedly small appearance. The rest of Chen Ji’s companions mostly observe and order drinks.
Significant themes
- Power without humanity: The Ancient Gods’ immortality and power have distorted them into predatory “beasts of gods,” strengthening Chen Ji’s resolve to build a more equal world.
- Cosmic cycles and existential threats: The Multiverse faces upheaval from the Dark Watcher, the Old Ones, and the Cancerous Force, especially as cosmic laws weaken during cycles of renewal.
- Cooperation across rivalries: Even wary or opposing forces must work together against threats capable of destroying the Multiverse.
