Ch. 521He Was the Head of Black Winter! Lucifer Wanted to Kill Hulk!
Plot points and events
- The Great Beast nearly swallows Lucifer, hoping to absorb his Calculon and become powerful enough to rival the Supreme God. Chen Ji rescues Lucifer at the last moment.
- Chen Ji identifies the Beast as the Head of Black Winter, one of several monstrous parts or incarnations of the Great Darkness. The Beast’s true objective is to steal Eden’s Sword, reach the Lobby Bar, and target Jack—the Marvel Universe’s Fulcrum.
- Chen Ji explains that Calculon is the power that fuels creation and that higher-dimensional beings can affect more of reality. The Great Beast is already at the peak of the Fourth Dimension and is close to reaching the Fifth.
- Chen Ji attacks, but learns that the Beast is more an embodiment of Lucifer’s malice and original sin than a physical creature. He counters it by summoning the Phoenix, whose positive energy frightens the Beast.
- Lucifer explains that the Phoenix is a fragment of a greater entity and that its return could awaken the opposing Invisible Spectrum, associated with Umbra and One-Below-All.
- Lucifer reveals that Banner carries gamma energy and may serve as a gateway for One-Below-All. When Banner mentions seeing a Green Door in his mind, Lucifer decides Hulk must be destroyed to protect the universe.
- Banner transforms into Hulk. Captain America and Stark defend him, arguing that Hulk has learned to control himself and should not be condemned for the source of his power.
Character developments and interactions
- Chen Ji proves decisive: he saves Lucifer, recognizes the Great Beast’s strategy, and uses the Phoenix as a counter. The Beast’s remark that Chen Ji may be a “Hand” also raises questions about the origin of Chen Ji’s powers.
- Lucifer shifts from near-victim to grim guardian of the universe. His fear of One-Below-All overrides his friendship with the heroes, turning him against Banner and Hulk.
- Banner/Hulk is revealed to have a possible connection to the Green Door and One-Below-All, something Banner himself had believed was only a dream. Hulk’s emergence prompts the Avengers to defend him.
- Captain America and Stark stand by Hulk, challenging Lucifer’s assumption that gamma power makes him an inevitable threat.
- The Great Beast grows more desperate after failing to consume Lucifer and shifts his attention to Chen Ji and the Phoenix.
Significant themes
- Power and control: Calculon and dimensional rank determine how much of reality a being can influence, while the Great Beast seeks power beyond the universe’s limits.
- Light versus darkness: The Phoenix’s positive energy opposes the Beast’s malice, while the Invisible Spectrum embodies hidden, primal urges.
- Fear, fate, and choice: Lucifer sees Hulk as a potential instrument of cosmic destruction, but the Avengers insist that Hulk’s choices and self-control matter more than his origins.
- Trust and loyalty: The chapter ends with the heroes forced to choose between Lucifer’s warning and their faith in their friend.
