Ch. 221Who Asked You?
Chapter Summary: “Who Asked You?”
Plot and events
After defeating Kenjaku in the mountains outside Sendai, Kasumi Miwa is overwhelmed with excitement. She repeatedly boasts to Jie Jian about landing nine consecutive Black Flashes, preventing Kenjaku from opening his Domain Expansion, and finally defeating the enemy who had haunted her since Shibuya. She also praises Jie Jian for cutting a cursed spirit in half and apparently saving Takako Uro with his Crescent Moon Skychaser.
Miwa and Jie Jian then encounter Takako Uro, who has secretly returned after leaving the battlefield. Uro explains that Jie Jian’s earlier attack seemed deliberately aimed to help her escape Kenjaku’s cursed spirits. Suspicious but grateful, she asks who Jie Jian is. Jie Jian identifies himself but gives only a vague explanation, claiming he once saw Uro from a distance when she served as captain of the Teng Clan’s assassination squad. Uro reacts angrily to the mention of the Teng Clan, recalling her betrayal and reinforcing her distrust of others.
Uro next asks whether Miwa truly defeated Kenjaku. Miwa hesitates, unsure of Uro’s motives, but Jie Jian eagerly launches into another exaggerated retelling of Miwa’s victory. The chapter closes by emphasizing how Miwa’s battle outside Sendai destroyed the reputation of “useless Miwa” that had been created by her failure to cut Kenjaku in Shibuya.
Character development
- Kasumi Miwa finally overcomes the psychological trauma and self-doubt caused by Shibuya. Her victory over Kenjaku proves to her that she is no longer powerless, allowing her to embrace the identity of “Useful Miwa.” Her nonstop excitement and boasting show both genuine pride and the emotional release of defeating the person who had defined her inferiority for so long.
- Jie Jian remains powerful, teasing, and evasive. He encourages Miwa’s confidence while also growing amused and exasperated by her constant repetition of the battle. His willingness to help Uro suggests compassion or a prior connection, but his vague explanation leaves his true identity mysterious.
- Takako Uro is shown as highly perceptive and cautious. She recognizes Jie Jian’s strength immediately and understands that he intentionally assisted her, yet her past betrayal by the Teng Clan prevents her from trusting him. Her curiosity about his identity hints at future tension or cooperation.
Character interactions
- Miwa enthusiastically recounts her victory while Jie Jian sarcastically complains that she has gone barely a second without mentioning it.
- Miwa assumes Uro is Jie Jian’s “old acquaintance,” but Uro denies knowing him, creating immediate confusion.
- Jie Jian clarifies that he recognized Uro from the past, though she never knew him personally.
- Uro confronts Jie Jian about his identity and his earlier intervention, balancing gratitude with suspicion.
- When Uro questions Miwa’s victory, Jie Jian speaks for her and turns the moment into another grand celebration of Miwa’s success.
Major themes
- Overcoming trauma and self-doubt: Miwa’s victory breaks the mental hold Shibuya and Kenjaku had over her.
- Reclaiming identity: The chapter contrasts “Useless Miwa” with “Useful Miwa,” showing Miwa replacing an imposed reputation with her own sense of worth.
- Trust and betrayal: Uro’s guarded behavior reflects the lasting impact of betrayal, while Jie Jian’s unexplained assistance complicates the question of whether he can be trusted.
- Recognition and validation: Miwa’s repeated retelling is not merely bragging; it is her attempt to make her achievement real after years of being treated as incapable.
