Background / History
Kaguya left Black Zetsu behind as a product of her will around the time of her sealing a thousand years earlier. She did not expect this casually created remnant to survive into the present, much less spend its existence plotting her rescue 161.
Black Zetsu’s schemes extend through the conflict between Indra and Asura and the subsequent history of their reincarnations. He witnessed the founding of Konoha and the other Great Ninja Villages, treating even Madara as a pawn rather than a true master 175 327.
His central deception involves the Uchiha stone tablet. He altered its contents to guide Madara and other Indra reincarnations toward the Eye of the Moon Plan. In the parallel time-space, he openly reveals that Infinite Tsukuyomi transforms its victims into White Zetsu rather than simply granting peaceful dreams 341.
Contact with Black Zetsu initially concerns Setsuna and Kaguya because he carries traces of power associated with Hagoromo’s lineage. Setsuna attributes these remnants to prolonged contact with Indra or Madara; both fear that approaching him could expose them to Hagoromo’s attention 161.
Appearance
- Pitch-black body and eyes: Frequently emerges as black mud before taking humanoid form 175 176.
- Pitcher-plant covering: Appears wrapped in a pitcher plant during his reports to Madara 175.
- Malleable form: Can leave half his body embedded in a tree or sink part of himself into the ground 175 192 216.
- Hoarse voice: Used both in respectful reports and confrontational exchanges 175 216.
- Combined presentation: His parallel counterpart appears intertwined with White Zetsu, their silent and cheerful mannerisms sharply contrasting 316.
Personality
Black Zetsu is cold, suspicious, and impatient with White Zetsu’s chatter. He adopts a respectful manner before Madara but privately regards him as an instrument of Kaguya’s resurrection. His accumulated experience allows him to recover quickly from initial shock and construct arguments defending his plans 158 162 175 176.
His devotion to Kaguya is also his greatest weakness. News of her chakra turns caution into fanatical excitement, and the possibility that her rescue is impossible leaves him despondent. Setsuna repeatedly exploits this attachment to frighten him or undermine his confidence 175 176 326.
Black Zetsu is proud of having manipulated others for a thousand years. Being misled during the God Tree fragment search feels like an unprecedented humiliation. His certainty can also become stubborn denial: after entering Setsuna’s Sealing Space, he insists that the real Kaguya is an illusion until she physically punishes him 177 214.
He is ruthless toward expendable enemies but pragmatic about useful allies. He kills intruding bandits without hesitation, yet decides to deceive Kakuzu less after recognizing his value as a powerful combatant 192 221.
Abilities & Skills
Levitation / Mayfly Technique
- Travels through the earth and emerges from trees, walls, or the ground, enabling concealed pursuit and infiltration 158 162 175 216.
- Uses this concealment for surveillance, including hiding within the Ten-Tails’ shadow in the parallel time-space 326.
- Claims that no one detected him during a thousand years of covert activity before Setsuna; he suspects the Land of Demons’ shrine maiden may be another exception 216.
- Cannot escape Setsuna’s specialized barriers, which block his movement and isolate sound, chakra, and ninjutsu 175 326.
Wood Release
- Possesses Wood Release as an available means of attack 175.
- Attempts to use it against the White Zetsu who summons him, but the surrounding barrier suppresses the technique before he can act 175.
Longevity and Survival
- Survives for at least a millennium as a manifestation of Kaguya’s will 161.
- Is described as immortal and indestructible, with sealing identified as a practical means of neutralizing him 177.
- His parallel counterpart has spare bodies and can attempt to abandon a burning body by separating his soul and consciousness 326.
- Setsuna prevents that escape by extinguishing the burning chakra and forcing the soul and consciousness back into the current body 326.
Intelligence Gathering and Historical Knowledge
- Serves as the God Organization’s dedicated intelligence scout, formally answering only to its leader 216.
- Monitors Nagato’s Rinnegan development and reports his early use of the Deva, Human, and Animal Paths 171 175.
- Supplies information about Madara’s control of Kirigakure and his consideration of Shisui as a backup successor 181 232 239.
- Identifies Turtle Island from obscure historical records and explains the reputed purpose of its Truth Waterfall 241.
- Knows about Karma and Vessels through memories inherited from Kaguya, but is not shown using Karma himself 176.
- Has gaps in his knowledge: he has never heard of the newly emerging Jashin Cult when Setsuna questions him 193.
Manipulation and Operational Planning
- Alters historical information and maintains false identities to guide others toward Kaguya’s restoration 326 341.
- Exploits Kakuzu’s financial ambitions to secure cooperation and combat assistance 217 221.
- Considers testing and recruiting the white-haired stranger encountered on Turtle Island 241.
- Conceals Setsuna’s activities, redirects disobedient members, and distributes scrolls for coordinated sealing operations 191 223 287 296.
Ambush and Possession
- Uses concealed emergence from trees to attack intruders at close range, twisting off a bandit leader’s head and attempting to tear out another bandit’s heart 192.
- His parallel counterpart attaches to and controls Obito before the betrayal of Madara 340.
- Ambushes Madara from behind, piercing his heart and immobilizing him while a supplied orb extracts his power 340.
- Claims that he is not skilled in combat when withdrawing from the confrontation with Yagura, leaving Kakuzu to fight the Mizukage 237.
Equipment / Items
- Grayish-black curse mark / control talismans — Supplied by Madara to activate previously controlled Kirigakure assets 162 175.
- Chakra-infused wooden fragment — Carries Kaguya’s chakra and serves as Setsuna’s lure; Black Zetsu seizes it upon recognizing his mother’s aura 174 175.
- Pure-white tracking light — Guides the God Tree remnant search. Setsuna later verifies that it is functioning despite the target’s evasive behavior 214 216.
- Directional sealing scrolls — Four scrolls marked North, South, East, and West, distributed to Kakuzu, Mangetsu, Kimimaro, and Haku for an arranged operation 296.
- Information sphere — Given to the parallel counterpart to explain Setsuna’s identity and events in another time-space 326.
- Protective Kaguya-chakra sphere — Given to the parallel counterpart to help shield him from Hagoromo and Hamura’s surveillance 327.
- Blue-gold extraction orb — Used by the parallel counterpart during Madara’s betrayal to draw out the Ten-Tails and consume Madara’s remaining power 340.
Relationships
- Otsutsuki Kaguya — Creator and “Mother”; rescuing her defines his purpose. His devotion is not equally reciprocated: she regards him as an unattractive remnant of her will and favors Setsuna 161 174.
- Hyuga Setsuna — Initially a surveillance target, later his strategic partner and superior within the God Organization. Black Zetsu comes to see Setsuna as the strongest hope for Kaguya’s revival 158 180 189 216.
- Uchiha Madara — Apparent master but actual pawn. Black Zetsu obeys his orders while concealing his true origin; the parallel counterpart ultimately betrays him 162 175 340 341.
- White Zetsu — Intelligence partners whose frivolity irritates him. Setsuna’s control over them allows one to lure Black Zetsu into a trap 158 174 175.
- Obito Uchiha — A manipulated successor and outward superior. Black Zetsu privately mocks his arrogance and eventually tells the powerless Obito that he was merely a pawn 299 379.
- Kakuzu — Initially an antagonistic colleague, then a business partner. They divide intelligence gathering and field operations and agree to share profits and contributions equally 216 217.
- Nagato — A monitored Rinnegan wielder essential to the long-term plan, rather than a personal ally 171 175.
- Hagoromo and Hamura — Enemies blamed for Kaguya’s imprisonment. Evidence of their continued influence repeatedly threatens Black Zetsu’s confidence 176 179 192 327.
- Miroku — Collaborator on an unspecified plan; she requires Setsuna’s approval before agreeing to proceed 257.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Surveillance and the First Encounter
During the Third Shinobi World War, Black Zetsu and White Zetsu follow Setsuna, Kakashi, and Minato under Madara’s orders. Kaguya senses a familiar presence after they leave, leading to discussions about deliberately contacting Black Zetsu 158 161.
Madara sends him to Kirigakure to activate controlled assets, delaying Setsuna’s intended meeting. Setsuna establishes a White Zetsu notification network and eventually receives word of his return 162 165 173.
The Hamura Deception
Setsuna lures Black Zetsu with Kaguya’s chakra, reveals his Tenseigan, and falsely introduces himself as Hamura. References to staged deaths and Karma convince Black Zetsu that his thousand-year effort may have been observed and rendered futile. Setsuna then takes him into the Sealing Space 174 175 176.
Black Zetsu mistakes the Kaguya inside for an illusion and insults her, provoking Byakugan: Coercion. He subsequently recognizes the space as real, kneels to apologize, and learns that Setsuna’s claimed identity was a prank 177 178.
Tailed Beast Capture and Intelligence Work
Black Zetsu agrees to Setsuna’s tailed-beast capture strategy while retaining the Eye of the Moon Plan as another route to Kaguya’s liberation. After witnessing Setsuna’s power against the Four-Tails, he regards the boy’s survival and growth as more important than the existing Rinnegan scheme 180 189.
He extracts Setsuna from the battlefield, guards the Four-Tails absorption site, and helps conceal the operation from Madara. The discovery of Hagoromo’s safeguard within the tailed beasts convinces him that Hagoromo remains alive 190 191 192.
God Tree Remnants and Organization Building
Setsuna assigns Black Zetsu to collect God Tree fragments. One unusually evasive remnant leads him around the Land of Demons for months and brings him close to detection by the shrine maiden 193 214 215 216.
He subsequently works with Kakuzu, investigates ancient records, and helps explore Turtle Island. During later operations, he acts as a handler: he redirects Kakuzu and Mangetsu from looting Konoha and organizes the four-person sealing assignment 217 239 241 287 296.
Parallel-Time-Space Counterpart
The Black Zetsu encountered during Setsuna’s journey to another time-space is a separate counterpart, initially unaware of Setsuna’s identity. He investigates the visitor’s Kaguya-like aura, is trapped and frightened by Setsuna, and finally receives information explaining their connection 315 316 319 326.
This counterpart accepts cooperation after learning that Setsuna also intends to rescue Kaguya. He continues the original plan, receives protection against surveillance, and performs the decisive betrayal that uses Madara as the medium for Kaguya Hime’s resurrection 327 335 340 341.
After victory in that time-space, he assists Setsuna’s public explanation of the war—mixing slander into the historical account—and becomes Minister of Intelligence, leading White Zetsu in surveillance of the villages 350 351.
Return and Final Victory
Back in Setsuna’s native time-space, Black Zetsu is astonished to encounter two Kaguyas together. He initially attributes the sight to hallucination caused by excitement over his approaching success 353.
Following the defeat and elimination of Hagoromo and Hamura, Black Zetsu finally experiences the fulfillment of his long-held revenge. He leaves to handle the aftermath and takes Obito away after exposing his status as an expendable pawn 379.

- His thousand years of experience do not prevent jealousy: he envies Kaguya’s affectionate treatment of Setsuna even while believing the scene is an illusion 177.
