When he saw what lay on the other side of the passage, red light flared in his eyes.

Beyond it stretched a blood-red sky, enormous pits spewing lava, and towering black spires.

And above that scorched wasteland floated a man in a skintight red-and-blue suit, the Stars and Stripes draped across his back.

With the apocalyptic landscape of Apokolips behind him, he held a massive monster aloft by the head.

The monster's limbs hung limp, terror written across his shaggy face.

It was Kalibak, the heir to Apokolips.

There was nothing commanding about Kalibak now.

His face was covered in blood, and his limbs dangled as though they had been snapped.

Darkseid recognized his son at once.

In that instant, every clue fell into place.

He finally understood the strange disturbance he had sensed on Apokolips from his flagship.

He had assumed some foolish rebels were causing trouble and that Kalibak, left behind to command, could crush them.
