Ch. 321Melee (Thanks to "Wen Peiran, Who Loves Stir-Fried Pork Tripe" for the Reward)
Chapter Summary: “Melee”
Plot and major events
Thanos uses the chaotic melee to try to return to the Heart of the Universe, but Captain Marvel and Hela anticipate his plan and form a defensive barrier. Captain Marvel repeatedly blocks his path while Hela protects her flank. Thanos eventually redirects toward other powerful beings, using their attacks on the two women as an opportunity to disappear into the massive crowd of cosmic powerhouses advancing toward the Heart.
As thousands of beings converge on the Heart of the Universe, fighting breaks out sporadically, with many weaker combatants killed. Captain Marvel’s reckless pursuit causes other powerhouses to treat her and Hela as threats, forcing them back. Hela then publicly warns everyone that Thanos has already refined the Heart’s power and must not be allowed to approach it. Thanos is exposed and attacked from all sides, partly because his aura matches that of the Heart and partly because his terrible luck causes weak-willed opponents to be drawn against him.
To divide the opposition, Thanos reveals that someone from the Creator Dimension—referring to the unconscious Earthling—has a method of refining the Heart’s energy. He warns that this person could recover and claim the Heart, leaving the others without a chance at transcendence. The gathered powerhouses split into two groups: some enter the Heart through a major artery, while others attempt to refine its energy from the outside.
Thanos is again confronted by Captain Marvel and Hela. He warns them that Thor cannot protect the Earthling alone, so Captain Marvel remains to restrain him while Hela goes to help Thor. Before she can reach the Heart, it suddenly beats, annihilating countless powerhouses on its surface. Thor then escapes through the artery opening carrying the severely wounded Apocalypse. He calls for Heimdall to activate the Bifrost, but Silver Surfer intercepts the Rainbow Bridge. At the same time, Sentry emerges and orders Thor to leave Apocalypse behind.
Character developments
- Thanos becomes increasingly desperate and physically damaged, with half his body destroyed and only the Heart’s lingering power keeping him alive. Despite this, he remains cunning, exploiting the crowd and manipulating everyone’s fears to create an opportunity. His terrible luck also turns the masses against him.
- Captain Marvel acts with determination and aggression, repeatedly risking herself to stop Thanos. Her urgency causes collateral deaths and makes other powerhouses view her as dangerous, but she ultimately chooses to hold Thanos back so Hela can assist Thor.
- Hela demonstrates strategic awareness and concern for the larger threat. She exposes Thanos to the crowd and remains focused on protecting Thor and the Earthling, though she is badly affected by Hellfire that counters her death-based powers.
- Thor shows courage and resourcefulness by escaping the Heart while carrying Apocalypse, but his emergence places him directly in the sights of the assembled powerhouses.
- Apocalypse is left gravely injured and dependent on Thor for escape and possible treatment.
- Sentry reasserts his overwhelming power and authority by emerging from the Heart and immediately demanding that Apocalypse be abandoned.
- Silver Surfer demonstrates his opposition to Thor’s escape by cutting off Heimdall’s Bifrost connection.
Significant themes
- Chaos and opportunism: The melee allows every character to exploit confusion, conceal intentions, and turn others against one another.
- Power versus cooperation: The powerhouses temporarily avoid full conflict because premature fighting would benefit their rivals, but suspicion and competition repeatedly threaten that fragile balance.
- Luck and fate: Thanos’s “zero luck” causes hostile circumstances to continually arise, turning even neutral or weak-willed opponents against him.
- Sacrifice and divided loyalties: Captain Marvel and Hela must choose between stopping Thanos and helping Thor, while Thor risks himself to save Apocalypse.
- The danger of transcendence: The Heart of the Universe represents ultimate power, but its energy is unstable and deadly, instantly destroying countless beings when it beats.
Key character interactions
- Captain Marvel and Hela coordinate their defense against Thanos, with Captain Marvel serving as the primary blocker and Hela covering her.
- Hela warns the assembled powerhouses about Thanos, indirectly turning the crowd into his enemy.
- Thanos manipulates Captain Marvel and Hela by claiming Thor cannot defend the Earthling alone.
- Captain Marvel asks Hela to aid Thor while she personally keeps Thanos occupied.
- Thor attempts to summon Heimdall, but Silver Surfer interrupts the escape.
- Sentry confronts Thor and commands him to abandon Apocalypse, setting up a direct conflict.
