The wind and snow stopped and fell by turns, covering the tracks of the raid while hiding the surging death beneath. When the reindeer sleds rushed out of the hills in the middle of the peninsula and reached the coastal plain on the west side, their speed north suddenly increased!
Every morning, while the sky was still dim, the herd set off north, moving and stopping along the cold coast until dusk, covering nearly two hundred li in a single day. The four hundred sled cavalry had only gone north for seven days, yet they had already crossed a thousand li on the peninsula.
Along the way, to the west was a bright white ice sea flashing with reflected light, the coast was a boundless gray-white snowfield, and to the east were glittering silver-white mountains. Between the ice sea and the mountains lay the territories of the various Mountain Tribes, tundra buried under snow. The marching column was large, and now and then they encountered panicked, stunned Mountain Tribe hunters by the coast. As for their reactions, they either nodded uneasily and left, or shouldered their bows and arrows and joined. And the farther north they went, the more fighting men from the small tribes chose to join them, as if the hostility and hatred that each Mountain Tribe held toward the Deer Tribe had long been buried in their hearts, too hard to endure.
