The spring wind of April swept over the towering great city in the mountains, and over the exquisitely carved red palace as well. Bright, lovely spring sunlight spilled across the gorgeous murals on the palace walls and shone upon the breathtaking carvings on the stone columns, together telling the ancient legends of the Moorish forefathers and the faith of the star and crescent. This was a stone palace made of sculpture, a medieval wonder in every sense of the word.
Yet now, atop the thirty-meter-high red palace walls, flags of the Spanish Monarchs and the cross stood everywhere, declaring who the ancient wonder's master was today. As for why these infidel murals and carvings could still be preserved for the moment, it was only because the Castilian royal treasury was empty, and they could not afford to hire craftsmen and painters from the Italian peninsula to carve and paint them anew. But without question, brand-new paintings of the Holy Mother and the Holy Son would inevitably cover and erase these traces of infidelity unaccepted by God.
