"Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh!"
A fierce rain of arrows shot from the advancing formation of holy-war veterans. The iron arrowheads were like falling short blades; when they struck the skin of the Taino tribesmen, blood gushed in an instant. Terrible death howled through the crowd, wave after wave, and soon a hundred men had fallen!
"Cassava God! Ancestors! No! It can't be like this!..."
Aramana, the chief of the Earth Mother tribe, the "Guardian of the Earth," stared in horror as the demons suddenly turned on them for no reason and charged over, bristling with killing intent. Even though these Taino had no armor at all, the veterans' instincts had long since become muscle memory. They said they wanted prisoners alive, but their hands were butchering!
"For the Lord! For the Queen!"
The heavy-armored veterans with long spears shouted, raising their two- to three-meter spears and stabbing them into the panicked Taino men! Their spears were vicious beyond measure; every thrust left a terrible piercing wound, fatal or crippling. The Taino opposite them desperately threw stones, hurled wooden spears, and shot short reed arrows, but when they struck these heavy-armored veterans, they could not pierce the armor at all!
"Kill the heathens!"
