Ch. 268New Farm Tools and Agricultural Productivity

Xolotl inspected newly developed bronze and wooden farming tools and planned how to use them to raise agricultural productivity across his fief. He ordered the Tuntian Army equipped before spring plowing and concluded that expanding copper mining was essential to make bronze tools affordable.

  • Xolotl inspected seven categories of new farm tools, including a Tread Plow, Seed Drill, Dragon Bone Pump, sickles, Tread Mortar, and wheelbarrow.
  • Xolotl ordered Charape to produce enough bronze sickles for at least half of the thirty thousand Tuntian Army troops within a month.
  • Xolotl directed Bertad to publicize the new tools as a Divine Revelation, and Charape praised their benefit to the people.
  • Bertad advised using bronze tools mainly in the tightly managed military colonies and issuing a few to civilian villages through priests; Xolotl approved the plan.
  • Xolotl ordered the workshops to equip the Tuntian Army before spring plowing and decided that large-scale copper mining was necessary to lower bronze costs.

Ch. 269Bronze Cannon, The First Epoch-Crossing Attempt!

Xolotl inspected the failed Sun God Eagle Cannon, identified problems with its casting, and ordered Tiripi to improve the molds and produce a large batch. He also commissioned a lighter Rain God Tiger-Crouching Cannon, leaving the bronze workshop under strict military control as its work began.

  • Tiripi reported that the trial Sun God Eagle Cannon had leaked smoke and fired only about 50 meters, so Xolotl tested it and found water leaks and an uneven bore.
  • Tiripi explained the lost-wax casting process and suggested that the clay molds needed longer to dry; Xolotl granted four more months and ordered thicker cannon bodies, polished bores, reinforcing hoops, and firing fixtures.
  • Xolotl ordered Charape and Tiripi to prepare forty Eagle Cannon molds and promised rewards for producing five or ten usable cannons, while threatening military punishment if they failed to make five by February.
  • Xolotl assigned four hundred coppersmiths and two hundred guards to the expanded, fortified workshop, placing its artisans under military law.
  • Xolotl gave Tiripi plans for a smaller cannon and ordered him to make a sample within two months, naming it the Rain God Tiger-Crouching Cannon.

Ch. 270October's Bountiful Harvest, Hearts Begin to Settle

As the autumn harvest flourished across the lake region, Chiwako and Weizti saw the Tuntian Army’s soldiers and Purepecha villagers grow accustomed to the new order under Xolotl. Xolotl inspected the fields, outlined plans to give Purepecha elites paths into the kingdom, and hurried toward the copper mine beneath Mount Tingambato.

  • Chiwako reminded Weizti that farming and peaceful family life mattered after years of war, and promised to obtain meat for Reed and Ayuli’s pregnant wife.
  • Soldiers praised Xolotl and repeated the priests’ prayers, while Chiwako received bronze sickles for his squad.
  • Villagers in the lake region discussed the harvest and their changing loyalties before kneeling to Xolotl’s Black Wolf banner.
  • Xolotl judged the harvest promising, discussed Chief Minister Jatiri’s work and plans for military and priest schools with Bertad, and described ways to advance Purepecha people.
  • Ezpan guided Xolotl toward the copper mine beneath Mount Tingambato, and Xolotl ordered the army to quicken its pace.

Ch. 271Discussions in the Southwestern Mountain Region

Shulot surveyed the southwestern mountains, their mineral resources, and the limits of the kingdom’s control, while learning that southern nobles were coordinating with mountain lords. He chose to address the land dispute before pacifying the southwest, then reached the copper mine and was greeted by Feather of the Divine Eagle.

  • Shulot admired the mountain terrain and learned from Ezpan that Tingambato held copper and Stones of the Dead, along with abandoned fortresses.
  • Bertad explained that the southwestern mountain communities were difficult to govern, and that Uruapan marked the kingdom’s effective border.
  • Shulot considered the routes and costs of expanding into the southwest, while Ezpan volunteered to pacify the mountain people.
  • Bertad reported that southern nobles were forming an alliance and contacting the mountain lords; he identified land as their main grievance.
  • Shulot said he would give the southern nobles another chance to choose regarding land, then continued toward the mine.
  • At the copper mine, Feather of the Divine Eagle knelt before Shulot and pledged to follow him.

Ch. 272Mine Inspection, Classical Era Mining

Xolotl inspected the Tingambato copper mine, questioned Nekali about its operation, and identified ways to improve mining safety and efficiency. He left Nekali in charge with the promise of a larger role as the mining district expanded.

  • Nekali reported that the mine had resumed work with a thousand miners, and Xolotl ordered him to improve their treatment while keeping production moving.
  • Xolotl praised Nekali’s management and promised to make him the overall head of the expanding mining district if he performed well.
  • Nekali described the mine’s location, copper deposits, fire-and-water rock breaking, underground hazards, and drainage needs.
  • Xolotl recognized the miners’ reports of extinguished flames and sudden deaths as signs of poor ventilation and carbon monoxide poisoning, and noted that deep tunnels needed wooden supports.
  • Nekali explained how miners were divided among logistics, ore processing, drainage, and excavation, then claimed the mine could produce 3,600 jin of copper material per day.

Ch. 273Mine Improvement, Divine Revelation's Guidance

Xolotl inspected the Tingambato mining district and ordered new supports, ventilation, lighting, hoisting, and drainage systems to raise copper production. He expanded the workforce and Nekali’s command, then Bertad discovered miners were burning a soft black stone as fuel.

  • Xolotl was shocked by the mine’s output, and Ezpan explained how rain and underground water limited excavation throughout the year.
  • Xolotl drew plans for mine supports, ventilation shafts, lighting, ore hoists, and bamboo pumps, and ordered Nekali to implement them and increase average output by half.
  • Xolotl ordered local taxes and corvée labor to support the mine, assigned surrendered troops to it, and demanded that its workforce reach three thousand by October and output triple by December.
  • Xolotl promoted Nekali to warrior camp commander and assigned him four hundred additional warriors to manage the miners.
  • Bertad inspected the cooking area and found the cooks burning soft black stones, which one cook called the solidified blood of underground demons.

Ch. 274Black Stone Mythology, Primitive Coking!

Xolotl discovered that miners had secretly used coal for years and turned it into coke, then surveyed the Tingambato mining district’s mineral wealth. He planned to make the district the fief’s industrial center and a source of power for the kingdom’s expansion.

  • Bertad showed Xolotl bituminous coal, and Ezpan explained that miners had secretly burned it for more than ten years after priests executed miners who reported it as demon blood.
  • Xolotl halted his farm inspection, ordered exploration teams to survey the area, and built a kiln to test earthen coking.
  • After ten days of calcining, Xolotl presented coke as a divine object and declared that commoners could safely use coal under the Main God’s blessing.
  • Exploration groups reported rich copper deposits, gold and silver, sulfur, lead-zinc ore, and more than twenty million tons of coal around Tingambato.
  • Xolotl decided to establish the fief’s future industrial center at Tingambato to support the kingdom’s conquests.

Ch. 275Distant Future: Industrial Technology Planning, Divine Revelation Book!

Xolotl completed a broad industrial technology plan and explained its priorities to Bertad, whom he intended to send to establish a state on the island in the eastern lake. The chapter ended with Bertad naming the plan the Book of Divine Revelation.

  • Xolotl showed Bertad his industrial technology plan and told him to establish a state on the island, integrate its tribes, guard against plague, build cannon fortresses, and smelt iron and steel.
  • Xolotl explained how fuels, coke, acids, and fertilizer could support industrial development.
  • Xolotl outlined the kingdom’s path from bronze smelting to ironmaking and steelmaking, along with the challenges of metalworking and machinery.
  • Xolotl described a possible early steam pump and noted that vulcanized rubber and glassmaking could also support future industries.
  • Bertad asked what the plan should be called, and Xolotl accepted his name for it: the Book of Divine Revelation.

Ch. 276The Choice

Xolotl considered how to develop Tingambato into the kingdom’s first industrial district and tested Ezpan’s willingness to lead it, ultimately keeping him as a legion commander while warning him about the old Tarasco nobles. Later, Xolotl recruited the captured merchant Trali to chart a water route to the Colima mountains and report on local tribes, leaving Ezpan to manage the mission.

  • Xolotl summoned Ezpan and offered him responsibility for expanding the Tingambato mining district, but Ezpan swore loyalty and Xolotl instead kept him in command of the legion, arranged his marriage, and warned him against close ties with old Tarasco nobles.
  • The kingdom expanded Tingambato with miners, craftsmen, supplies, and troops, while scouts captured Tepanec merchant Trali and his companions near the copper mines.
  • Xolotl questioned Trali, who revealed that he had traveled by water from Cihuatlan past the mouth of the Balsas River toward the Colima mountains.
  • Xolotl offered Trali copper and royal trading privileges in exchange for scouting the waterway and reporting on the local tribes, and Trali agreed under threat of punishment.
  • Xolotl ordered Ezpan to oversee Trali’s mission and departed.

Ch. 277The Alliance Priesthood, the Priesthood's Divine Right Separation!

Xolotl expanded the mining district, established plans for Black Stone City, and appointed Nekali to manage its mines and laborers. After the Alliance Priesthood arrived in Tzintzuntzan, Xolotl returned to the capital and considered how to divide the priesthood into branches while building a centralized divine-power government.

  • Xolotl inspected improved coke production, chose a riverside site for Black Stone City, and assigned Nekali to oversee the mining district.
  • Xolotl gave Nekali surrendered troops and warriors, instructed him to reward loyal miners and maintain control, and urged him to master industrial production.
  • Nekali reported that coal output had reached a level sufficient to support large-scale production, and Xolotl joined the work on a third batch of coke.
  • A messenger told Xolotl that Alliance priests, craftsmen, and Mexica warriors' families had arrived in Tzintzuntzan, so Xolotl returned to the capital with an escort.
  • At the capital, Xolotl surveyed the priests, generals, and officials and reviewed his plan to divide the priesthood into five branches and incorporate local elites into the administration.

Ch. 278Two High Priests

Xolotl welcomed Chief Priests Ugos and Marivelo to Tzintzuntzan City and learned that the Alliance had retaken its eastern fortresses and made peace with the Tlaxcalans. The chapter ended with Marivelo announcing that the Great Sacrifice to the Main God would take place the following January.

  • Xolotl greeted Ugos and Marivelo, who had arrived with the families of the Northern Legion warriors.
  • Marivelo reported that Prince Tepopollo had raised a territorial dispute with the Otomi People and might send envoys to contact the king.
  • Ugos asked Xolotl for support rebuilding the Main God's temple and permission to pursue personal pleasures, and Xolotl agreed to modest temple work and offered him a visit to the royal hot springs.
  • Marivelo reported that the Alliance had retaken the eastern fortresses from the Tlaxcalans, inflicted losses, and agreed to a peace treaty after two years of war.
  • Xolotl and the priests praised the Main God, and Marivelo said the Great Sacrifice would be held in January with the New Year's ceremony.

Ch. 279Priest University, Light of the Divine Power Lake

Xolotl organized the arriving Alliance priests into the Lake Diocese and assigned Marivelo to lead missionary affairs. He appointed Bravo vice principal of a new royal-capital school, which he named Shenwei University, Light of the Divine Power Lake.

  • Xolotl inspected the western priests and discussed their backgrounds and the Priesthood’s internal factions with Marivelo.
  • Xolotl established priestly departments, appointed Ugos chief Scripture Priest, Jatiri chief Historiographer Priest, and Marivelo chief Missionary Priest.
  • Xolotl directed Marivelo to send trained priests into settlements as administrators and to prepare missionaries for the northern highlands.
  • Xolotl appointed Bravo vice principal of a new higher priest school in the royal capital and instructed him to admit students from across the fiefdom.
  • Xolotl named the new school Shenwei University, Light of the Divine Power Lake.

Ch. 280Father's Long Road, Meetings and Farewells

Xolotl reunited with his father Xoloc, who explained that he would return to the capital to serve in the Eagle Legion and help the Alliance centralize power. They arranged the settlement and command of the Holy City Warriors and the northern territories before Xoloc departed, leaving Xolotl to face new northern concerns.

  • Xolotl welcomed Xoloc and Olorosh to Huayamo after inspecting farms and military colonies across the lake region.
  • Xoloc told Xolotl he would return to the capital as deputy legion commander of the Eagle Legion and surrender control of the Holy City to the Alliance center.
  • Xolotl granted land and titles to the Holy City Warriors who stayed, and Olorosh agreed to remain with him as the kingdom's second glory noble.
  • Xoloc entrusted his three older younger siblings to Xolotl and discussed the population, priests, and military needs of River Mouth County.
  • Xoloc reported that the Chichimec Dog-kin were preparing to move south and that an old Otomi priest wanted to meet Xolotl, who decided to send envoys and investigate.
  • Xoloc said farewell to Xolotl and Olorosh, then departed for the capital with guards and new bronze armor.

Ch. 281The Alliance After the War, The Journey East

Xoloc traveled east to the Lake Capital after the Western Expedition, where he saw the king’s reforms and growing power firsthand. He arrived at the palace and faced the king’s pointed question about his conversation with Tepetell.

  • Xoloc reached River Mouth Fortress, then traveled east by boat and exchanged news with nobles in Tlocan.
  • At a banquet, Tepetell urged Xoloc to speak against the king’s reforms, and Xoloc promised to put in a good word for him.
  • Xoloc continued to the Lake Capital and observed new trade controls, victory celebrations, and the construction of a vast royal palace.
  • Xoloc saw Maya Blue dye being carried to the Great Temple and learned that the palace foundations would include the blood of Tarasco god-descendants.
  • Xoloc entered the palace, greeted the king, and heard him ask whether Xoloc and Tepetell had enjoyed a pleasant conversation.

Ch. 282The Throne in the Shadows

Avet forced Xoloc to accept blame for Tepetell’s execution and rewarded him with political and military promotions. As the Alliance prepared for its grand sacrifice, Avet approved a plan to preserve the Tarasco royal bloodline while treating Zuangua as the principal offering.

  • Avet confronted Xoloc about Tepetell’s alleged disloyalty, then revealed Tepetell’s severed head and Gilim described the official account that would blame Xoloc for the execution.
  • Xoloc realized Izel had helped engineer Tepetell’s death and submitted to Avet’s version of events; Avet rewarded him with a secure post as deputy commander of the Eagle Legion and promised Tepetell’s head would be displayed at the victory ceremony.
  • After Xoloc left, Gilim reported that the high priest had publicly praised Tepetell’s death and summarized how the Alliance’s victories and noble casualties had weakened resistance to Avet’s centralizing reforms.
  • Avet and Gilim discussed Izel’s role in killing his father and confirmed preparations to drug the Tarasco royal captives for the grand sacrificial ceremony.
  • Gilim told Avet that Zuangua would kneel before him and die publicly if Avet spared the Divine Eagle bloodline; Avet agreed to preserve Shatini and proceed with the sacrifice.

Ch. 283New Year Grand Sacrifice, Alliance Grand Spectacle!

On the New Year Grand Sacrifice, Xoloc joined the Eagle Legion’s guard at the Great Temple and learned that thousands of captives from the Western Expedition would be sacrificed. As the rites began, the immortal Elder Cihuacoatl arrived, and the assembled people prostrated themselves before him.

  • Xoloc dressed for the festival, offered two pearls beneath the Main God’s golden sun, and prayed for his father and son.
  • Xoloc met Stanley, who explained that the sacrifice would claim about eight thousand captives and that King Avet had ordered many Tarasco loyalists sent to the altars.
  • Xoloc and Stanley led the Eagle Warriors to guard the Great Temple as sacrifices and human-sacrifice ball games filled the Temple district.
  • The commanders received spears bearing the severed heads of Tepetell and the Tarasco commander Cuyus, whom the Mixtec people had killed and sent to the Alliance.
  • The crowd erupted in praise as Cihuacoatl, the immortal Elder and incarnation of the Main God, descended to the mortal world.

Ch. 284New Year Grand Sacrifice, The Elder's Heart

During the Mexica New Year sacrifice, Tlacaelel publicly celebrated victory over the Purepecha and began a three-day offering of captured nobles. Out of the crowd’s sight, the frail Elder nearly collapsed, then asked who could hold the Alliance together after his death.

  • Tlacaelel appeared before the crowd, and the Mexica people and foreign envoys hailed the eighty-eight-year-old chief minister.
  • The high priest declared that Huitzilopochtli had defeated the Purepecha gods and proclaimed the Purepecha and Mexica descendants of the Rubber People.
  • The priests began the three-day sacrifice, and Kukuna II of Acambaro State was killed as Xoloc and Stanley watched.
  • Tlacaelel offered a fresh heart to the Sacred Fire, then left the ceremony for the Temple with Chevali following him.
  • In a secluded passage, Tlacaelel collapsed and refused medicine, saying the Alliance still needed him alive.
  • Tlacaelel asked Chevali who could suppress the Alliance’s factions after his death, then wondered what would happen if the high priest died with him.

Ch. 285New Year Grand Sacrifice, King's Will

At the New Year sacrifice, Ahuitzotl presented the captured Tarasco king Zuangua as an offering, using his submission and death to proclaim Mexica supremacy. The ceremony continued with tributes from Alliance states and foreign envoys, ending with Avet declaring himself master of the world as the sun set.

  • Ahuitzotl appeared atop the Great Temple as sacredly presented Wooden Cannons fired, and proclaimed Zuangua the supreme sacrifice for the Mexica victory.
  • Zuangua was carried through the capital, met Ahuitzotl on the pyramid, knelt in submission, and recited a final poem before Ahuitzotl sacrificed him.
  • Avet burned Zuangua’s original poem and ordered the high priest’s altered version recorded as the official epic.
  • The sacrifice continued with nobles and royal figures from the Patzcuaro Lake Region, while envoys from Alliance states and foreign peoples presented tribute to the king.
  • The Tlaxcalan envoy offered tribute and a plea for peace, and Avet celebrated the Mexica Alliance’s dominance.
  • Avet raised the Divine Staff as cannons fired at sunset and declared himself the incarnation of the Main God and master of sky, earth, and lakes.

Ch. 286New Sacrifice, Wolf, Deer, and Fish!

Shulot presided over the Lake Kingdom’s New Year sacrifice, replacing human offerings with animals and uniting the kingdom’s diverse customs. As the banquet began, he considered future campaigns against the Tlaxcalan, the Lake Chapala region, and a closer target represented by the river fish.

  • A young girl sent Avilot west with a letter, and the golden eagle hunted an elk and caught a fish before flying back toward the Lake Capital.
  • At the royal capital of Tzintzuntzan, Shulot offered a coyote, an elk, and a river fish to the gods, leading a New Year ceremony that substituted animal sacrifices for human ones.
  • Shulot celebrated the end of war and famine with the people, then changed into banquet attire and went to the Palace of Wind with Ugos and Marivelo.
  • A southern envoy from Purple Grass County waited outside the banquet, but Shulot offered no clear answer about the fief.
  • As generals gathered for the feast, Shulot considered the Tlaxcalan, the Lake Chapala region, and the river fish as targets in his plans for a new campaign.

Ch. 287Kingdom Banquet, Xolotl Dances with His Sword!
